Description

The description of the Chalcedony variety is not much different from any other onion variety. The shell of the bulb is bronze in color with a brown tint, and the insides consist of juicy white scales. During growth, the bulb is located ⅓ above the ground, which speeds up ripening and subsequent harvesting. Chalcedony is not only excellent for storage, but also easy to dry.

You can supplement the technical description of the bulbs with statistical calculations: the germination of this variety is 92%, the energy is 90%. Due to the location of the bulb during growth, the best condition for ripening is a dry, well-heated place by the sun. Variety “Chalcedony” contains a rich set of useful vitamins of groups C, B1, B2, B6. In addition, it contains folic acid, carotene, essential oils.

Chalcedony onion seeds are resistant to cold and begin to germinate already from 5°C, and grow vigorously as soon as the thermometer shows 18°C. Due to the fact that this variety does not have a developed root system, a large number of bulbs can be planted in a small area.

Agrotechnics

Seeds of this variety are recommended to germinate before planting in open ground. Usually they begin to germinate in March or early April, in pots or bulky plastic boxes. Remember that planted seeds must be covered with a film to maintain a stable temperature and soil moisture. This variety is extremely unpretentious in growing conditions, so just water the seedlings on time, air the pot regularly.

The seeds must first be soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate for a day to awaken internal resources. Seeds of this variety give the first sprouts within 5-6 days after planting. After that, until the formation of strong green arrows, the seedlings should be placed daily under a fluorescent lamp for at least 12 hours.

Before planting, future beds should be carefully prepared. Proceed from the fact that the width of one bed should be about 1 m, and the height should not exceed 10 cm. The earth should be well sprinkled with wood ash, and rotted compost should be added. Mineral fertilizers should not be applied, as they can adversely affect the taste of the onion. Before planting, it is recommended to cover the prepared beds with a dense film in order to prevent the earth from drying out and destroy the weeds.

The variety is planted in open ground at the end of April, but on condition that the soil has warmed up sufficiently and the site is not in the shade. At the same time, planting germinated bulbs of this variety gives better results than planting sevkom. Sprouted bulbs are laid out at a distance of 2-3 cm, to a depth of 1,5-2 cm, between the beds there should be at least 10-12 cm. The bulbs are laid out with their roots to the ground, slightly pressing against one wall of the bed. Try not to cover the seedlings with soil too much, the bulbs should peek out of the ground, otherwise they will take root longer, the growth rate will noticeably decrease.

Bulb net should be sprinkled with compost, watered. At the stage of getting used to the seedlings to new living conditions, regular watering is important. Of course, do not forget about weeding – weeds will easily survive the bulbs from the garden, due to their undeveloped root system. This variety does not tolerate breaking green arrows, so try to control yourself. It is necessary to fertilize the beds twice: the first time – when 2-3 leaves appear, then a diluted mullein is brought in; the second – 20 days after the first feeding, add a mixture of potassium, urea and superphosphate. Chalcedony shows good germination results, so you probably won’t need to feed more.

Harvesting takes place in August-September, since by this time the nutrients have moved into the bulb. Dig up the bulbs with a pitchfork, and then collect them in a convenient container. After harvesting, it is recommended to leave the onions to dry for a month and a half, while maintaining good ventilation. After that, the onion is ready for use and further storage. Having planted Chalcedony once and having received a rich harvest of beautiful bulbs, you are unlikely to refuse it. Especially considering the fact that onions do not require special care and can be grown in absolutely any conditions.
