“Looking at my child’s suffering is the worst that has happened to me so far”

Actress Joanna Opozda decided to share information about her son’s illness on social media.

«Unfortunately, yesterday my one-month-old son was diagnosed with a serious infection, he had a terrible fever in the morning and we will spend the next time in the hospital in the neonatal pathology ward. Little is given an intravenous antibiotic and his condition is stable. It’ll be all right. Once again, I realized that nothing in life is as important as health. Looking at the suffering of my child is the worst that has happened to me so far »- Opozda writes on his Instagram profile. The actress also drew attention to the conditions in children’s wards in Polish hospitals, where mothers do not have a place to sleep. And yet, leaving a newborn or infant for the whole night for freshly baked mums is beyond mind.

«I spent tonight on the hospital floor, lying next to Vincent’s cot. There are no beds for mothers in such wards, only armchairs that are impossible to even feed on. I cannot imagine how all those mums, who sometimes have to spend several months in such a place, manage to do so »- he adds.

Why do young children go to the hospital? Each infection can be serious

For parents of young children, vigilance and speed are very important. Young organisms of toddlers cannot cope with pathogens, they also become dehydrated quickly. Therefore, it often happens that a newborn or infant requires hospitalization, and its condition worsens in the blink of an eye.

A toddler may go to the hospital, for example due to malnutrition – even if he is fed with mother’s milk. It happens that it is not nutritious enough, so the baby starts to lose weight, although constantly on the breast.

A toddler who develops diarrhea or vomiting may also require specialist intervention. While in the case of a several-year-old child, electrolytes and adequate hydration are usually sufficient, in a newborn such methods are often not sufficient. Therefore, dehydration that is dangerous to health and life occurs very quickly, which can only be dealt with through the use of specialized treatment. The same applies to fever: it can be very dangerous for a toddler, so the temperature must be carefully monitored and reacted if necessary.

Babies are also at risk from viruses, including rotaviruses, pneumococci and meningococci. Basically, any deterioration in a toddler’s health requires careful observation and consultation with a doctor.

In the following months of life, the child’s immune system strengthens. In addition, he becomes protected against many serious diseases due to vaccinations. These initial moments in a child’s life are therefore particularly difficult and require mindfulness from parents. Later it gets a little easier – at least when it comes to reactions to pathogens.
