Recent research suggests that probiotics – live microorganisms found in food – are not only healthy from a nutritional point of view, but may also positively affect the heart. Taking two doses of probiotics a day by people with elevated cholesterol levels can reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood.

The probiotic used for this study was a special formula Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242, which in previous studies showed its positive effect on the body. 127 people with elevated cholesterol participated in the study. Half of them took the probiotic for 9 weeks, the other half were given a placebo. It turned out the hosts Lactobacillus reuteri NCIMB 30242 they had Fr. 11,6% lower levels of bad cholesterolu compared to the control group and 9,1% lower total cholesterol. However, taking the probiotic did not affect good cholesterol levels. It is worth noting, however, that the study was funded by the manufacturer of probiotics – Micropharma, which plans to enter the market soon.
