On the right wavelength: ultrasonic peeling

What is ultrasonic peeling for? In what cases does it work, and in what cases is it useless? How is it different from acid peels and what is better (or worse) than mechanical facial cleansing? You will find answers to these and other questions on the topic in this article.

Ultrasonic peeling – what is it?

Ultrasonic facial peeling (US peeling) is a hardware skin cleansing procedure based on the action of ultrasonic waves that are applied to the surface of the epidermis and create vibrations, as a result of which dead skin particles and impurities seem to be knocked out of the skin.

Ultrasonic peeling is carried out using a special spatula (scrubber), which, on the one hand, serves as a conductor through which an ultrasonic wave is transmitted to the skin, and on the other hand, acts as a scraper that collects and removes “dirt”.

Ultrasound peeling is a more modern name for the method, which for many years was known as ultrasonic cleaning, which, in our opinion, is more correct: such a definition more accurately conveys the purpose and essence of the procedure, which consists in intensive skin cleansing.

Comparison with any of the well-known professional peels is not entirely correct, since ultrasonic peeling is rather a less traumatic and gentler alternative to manual facial cleansing. Read more about the difference between exfoliation and exfoliation here.

How does ultrasonic peeling work and what effect does it have on the skin?

Let’s repeat in simple words how ultrasonic peeling works.

The ultrasonic wave interacts with the gel applied to the skin, producing the effect of cavitation – the formation of multiple air bubbles. Bursting, they create pressure, as a result loosen the surface of the epidermis and “knock out” everything unnecessary from it: sebum, dead cells, the smallest impurities. And the spatula removes all this “garbage”.

The skin becomes smoother, the pores are clearer and less pronounced, the greasiness is reduced, the radiance appears, the complexion and susceptibility to subsequent care improve – as always after intensive cleansing and superficial exfoliation.

Benefits of ultrasonic peeling

All the advantages of ultrasonic peeling are a consequence of its main advantage – delicacy, which can be a decisive factor for owners of sensitive skin. Ultrasonic peeling:

  • does not violate the integrity of the epidermis;

  • does not cause pain;

  • leaves no traces;

  • held in any season;

  • has no restrictions on the frequency of procedures.

What can be blamed for ultrasonic facial peeling is its superficial effect and inability to remove imperfections, therefore it is often combined with mechanical manual cleaning: first, everything that is possible is removed with the help of the apparatus, and then cleaned by hand.

Indications for ultrasonic peeling of the skin of the face

Among the indications for ultrasonic facial skin peeling:

  • impure and oily skin;

  • open comedones (black dots);

  • expanded pores;

  • dullness of the skin;

  • uneven terrain.

Ultrasonic peeling is not prescribed for acne in the acute stage, that is, in the presence of inflammatory elements (pimples) – in this case, chemical peels are more appropriate: salicylic, glycolic, Jessner (of course, as prescribed by a cosmetologist).

How is ultrasonic peeling performed?

We tell you how ultrasonic peeling for the face is carried out step by step.

Prepare

First of all, the face is cleansed, then a steaming agent is applied to the skin (usually a cold hydrogenation gel or a lotion to soften the sebaceous secretion) and left for 20 minutes under the film.

Cleaning

Cleaning is carried out on a contact medium, that is, a gel. The cosmetologist holds a scrubber in one hand, and a cotton pad soaked in liquid in the other, moisturizing the skin before each penetration. It takes 5-10 minutes to process one zone.

Completion

At the end of the cleaning process, the face is wiped with a disinfectant solution, and then a soothing mask is applied.

Features of skin care after ultrasound peeling

Ultrasonic facial peeling does not require rehabilitation, after the procedure, redness sometimes occurs, which disappears very quickly. If the skin is sensitive, redness may last until the next morning.

As after any cleansing, you need to refrain from decorative cosmetics for 12 hours and protect your skin from the active sun for the first few days. However, sun protection is always relevant, regardless of procedures.

How often can ultrasonic facial peeling be done?

How often you can do ultrasonic facial peeling is determined individually. Depending on the type and condition of the skin, it is carried out as a course or as a maintenance procedure. Probably, the course will be needed for owners of oily skin, prone to pollution and the formation of sebaceous plugs. For a stable result, an average of 5 sessions with an interval of 2 weeks is required.

With a normal skin type, one procedure every two months is enough, and with dry skin it is done even less often.

Determine your skin type by answering a few questions.

Overview of intensive cleansing products

Since ultrasonic peeling provides deep cleansing of the face, we decided to support the theme by putting together a collection of products for intensive cleansing and skin exfoliation.

Ultra-cleansing gel with a brush against acne “Clean Skin Active”, Garnier

The silicone brush intensively cleanses pores of dead cells, impurities, sebum, while salicylic acid and blueberry extract in the gel help to reduce the number of imperfections and blackheads.

Gel + Scrub + Mask 3-in-1 with Clear Skin Clay, Garnier

The gel with white clay, minerals and abrasive pumice particles can be used in three ways – in all cases, the skin will become clean, matte, polished, and the pores will narrow.

Steaming face mask with zinc “Clean Skin”, Garnier

Thanks to the thermal effect, the mask opens the pores, and two types of clay (kaolin and montmorillonite) intensively cleanse them, while salicylic acid and zinc prevent the appearance of imperfections and blackheads.

Facial sugar scrub, purifying, reducing blackheads, L’Oréal Paris

The composition with three types of sugar, kiwi grains, lemongrass and mint oils also has a warming effect, perfectly cleans pores and at the same time softens the skin – peeling and cleansing in one formula.

Facial peeling mask “Magic Clay. Cleansing and narrowing the pores, L’Oréal Paris

Intense Pore Cleansing Clay Mask with algae extract and exfoliating effect. The mask is applied to damp skin and aged for 5-10 minutes.

Micro-exfoliating cleansing gel for skin with severe imperfections, La Roche-Posay

The gel for problem skin provides an exfoliating effect without the participation of scrub particles – an acid complex (salicylic acid and LHA) is responsible for cleansing, smoothing and renewing the skin, zinc is responsible for reducing oiliness, and glycerin is responsible for moisturizing. The product intensively cleanses the skin, reduces the visibility of imperfections and traces of them, and also prevents their reappearance. Can be used both for washing and for cleansing problem areas on the body: shoulders, décolleté, back.

Summary results

What is the principle of operation of ultrasonic peeling?

Ultrasonic peeling is based on the ability of ultrasound to create a zone of cavitation (pseudo-boiling), as a result of which skin scales are actively exfoliated, the mouths of the sebaceous and sweat glands are cleaned. Ultrasonic waves are applied to the surface of the skin through a special scraper, with which the beautician treats the skin, removing impurities.

Which is better – ultrasonic or acid peeling?

In cosmetology, these techniques occupy different niches: ultrasonic peeling belongs to the category of hardware facial cleansing, its main task is to gently cleanse the skin without damaging the skin, while acid peeling is aimed at exfoliating and renewing the skin due to chemical damage to the epidermis, and how surface layer, and deeper ones, depending on the protocol of the procedure. Acid peeling (depending on the variety) can be a rather aggressive procedure, while ultrasound has a gentle effect on tissues that does not require rehabilitation.

Which is better – ultrasonic cleaning or mechanical?

Each variety has its own advantages. Ultrasonic cleaning is not traumatic, does not leave marks, as it does not involve pressure and pain, is suitable for sensitive skin, perfectly cleanses from impurities, excess sebum, dead cells, but it cannot cope with deep imperfections. To remove them, you need hands and special tools. Therefore, combined cleaning is so popular: ultrasonic + mechanical (manual).
