Fatigue and lack of strength are often the result of partying too much the day before. But it could also be one of the symptoms of a coronavirus infection, in particular the Omikron variant. How can you tell the difference between these two causes of fatigue? Explains the anesthesiologist.
- Dr. Angelique Coetzee, a South African doctor, talks about two symptoms of coronavirus infection that are typical of Omikron. This is enormous fatigue and an increased heart rate
- It could also be the “next day syndrome”, or simply a hangover

Omicron symptoms and hangover – how to distinguish?
Symptoms of coronavirus infection in the Omikron variant do not differ much from the symptoms accompanying Delta infection. The most common symptoms are elevated temperature, cough, runny nose, headache and sore throat.
However, Dr. Angelique Coetzee, a South African doctor who first alerted the world to a possible new variant, also has two symptoms that are typical of the Omicron. This is enormous fatigue and an increased heart rate. And the first symptom may appear during intense partying, especially after drinking a lot of alcohol.
That’s why anesthesiologist Dr. Ed Patrick reveals how to distinguish Omicron-related fatigue from – let’s call it – a hangover. This is valuable information, especially useful during New Year’s Eve games.
- Delmicron – what are the risks of combining Delta and Omicron?
“Generally speaking, to distinguish hangover fatigue from that caused by COVID-19, you need to check for other symptoms,” he explains. “If your fatigue is accompanied by a high temperature, coughing, muscle or body aches or shortness of breath, you should perform a PCR test as soon as possible and start isolation,” he adds.
– If, however, fatigue consists in saying “from today I do not drink alcohol” or “you did not have to drink the last round”, you can suspect that we are dealing with a classic hangover – says Dr. Patrick.
The anaesthesiologist points out that fatigue can be caused by many factors, but in the party season it can more often be associated with previously drunk alcohol.
The most important thing, in his opinion, is “listening to your body” and paying attention to all disturbing symptoms. When we feel bad, severely “damaged”, isolation will be crucial, even if it turns out to be just a hangover. – As a doctor, I suggest self-isolation, combined with drinking plenty of fluids, preferably on the couch in front of the TV. And waiting for this persistent ailment to pass – she says.
How can I protect myself from COVID-19 during the party season?
Dr. Ed Patrick also shares his advice on how to be safe when partying and hanging out frequently. “Testing yourself as often as possible is crucial,” he says.
Shaun Doak, head of a sanitary safety and specialist cleaning company, talks about different rules. In his opinion, the most important rule concerns personal hygiene, especially hand washing for at least 20 seconds.

What else can be done to minimize the risk when celebrating together?
– During meetings, the participants should be seated in such a way that members of different households do not sit close to each other. This will help reduce transmission, he says. – By placing people from the same household in front of each other, the exhaled drops or aerosols can infect mainly those with whom you live – he adds.
– Replacing board games with other forms of fun, such as puns, can also help. This will prevent members of different families from touching the same elements, says Doak.
