The English gentlemen Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Popkins, the cats Sharlik and Murr, as well as the mysterious Khryuntik Mamuntik live in the new book by Olga Sedakova. Psychologies: Why did you start writing for children?
Olga Sedakova: I didn’t set out to become a children’s author. The poetic texts included in “Khruntik Mamuntika” were born as blanks for word games that we played with my children friends. These are not exactly ready-made poems: there are also quatrains that children can continue and vary, and lines for reading in two voices. Communicating with children is a gift for me. I remember my own childhood well and love it, and I am very happy in the unexpectedness that is always in the look of a child, to recognize and remember something of my own, my own view of the world.
You poetize childhood, for you the taste of a child is the best, unspoiled taste. But don’t children often turn out to be ideal consumers of mass culture?
О. С.: Вкус – это культурное понятие. У ребенка еще нет соответствующей культуры и опыта, а потому нет и взрослых понятий о хорошем и плохом вкусе. Детям от природы свойственна любовь ко всему яркому, звонкому. Но из того, что ребенок предпочтет броское, необычайное, отнюдь не следует, что лучшим ответом ему будут примитивные формы массовой культуры. Дети прекрасно воспринимают европейское средневековое искусство (например, витражи), древность, все классическое народное искусство. Если ребенок выбирает массовую культуру (которая скорее пародирует детский вкус), значит, ему просто не показали другое, не предоставили выбора.
