The book about the journey of the Russian scientist N. N. Miklukho-Maclay to the Papuans of New Guinea will primarily interest boys, as well as everyone who is attracted by adventures, unfamiliar countries, mysterious islands. This is a fascinating robinsonade — and at the same time a story about the painstaking work of a researcher who studied the language and customs of an unfamiliar people. Oleg Orlov wrote a brief history of the life of Miklouho-Maclay in a simple and accessible language, understandable for an older preschooler. What makes the book truly captivating are the illustrations by Vadim Ivanyuk, which imitate the handwritten field observation journal that Maclay kept while communicating with the Papuans and getting to know their way of life. There is even a Papuan-Russian dictionary with pictures compiled by him… Holding a book in your hands, it’s hard not to want to become an ethnographer, linguist or just a traveler.
