Oily facial skin is a common occurrence. It occurs when the sebaceous glands work too hard and produce too much sebum. Such skin requires a special approach when cleansing and applying cosmetics.
WHAT SYMPTOMS DO OILY SKIN PATIENTS HAVE?
They have shiny skin on the central parts of the face, especially on the forehead and nose.
The pores are enlarged and the skin is thicker. In the most serious cases, an oily film is felt when touched on the skin. Such patients often complain of problems with applying makeup.
WHAT CLEANING ADVICE DO YOU GIVE THEM?
I explain to patients that the skin does not always react the way we want: the harder we try to remove sebum, the more it is produced. Therefore, it is important to use products specially formulated for this type of skin, avoiding cleansers that are too aggressive. Often I prescribe micellar water or cleansing milk, which is washed off with water. In the evening, the skin needs gentle cleansing.
WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR MOISTURIZING OILY SKIN WITH PEELING?
The paradox is that sebum protects the skin from drying out.
However, oily skin often begins to peel off, sometimes leading to seborrheic dermatitis in the central part of the face. Patients should use products specially formulated for this skin type. I recommend water-based beauty products so as not to increase the oiliness of the skin. I also recommend mattifying moisturizers to reduce shine.
