Oilseed radish
Oil radish is a unique plant that can be grown for several purposes. It is a good bait for attracting pollinating insects, produces high-quality honey, and is a nutritious food for livestock. But its main purpose for summer residents is to fertilize the garden and increase productivity.
Benefits of oil radish as fertilizer
Radish is completely unpretentious to care for; special knowledge and conditions are not required for its cultivation. And using it as a fertilizer will help to significantly improve the quality and fertility of the soil.
The main advantages of the fertilizer include the following:
- Resistance of the culture to frost and drought. It can be planted from early spring to late autumn and even left for the winter.
- Adaptability to any type and quality of soil. It grows successfully even in the most impoverished areas.
- Active loosening, structuring and drainage of the soil, thanks to a powerful branched root system. Thanks to this, the soil is well saturated with oxygen, and its moisture capacity increases.
- Destruction of weeds and pests.
- The rapid decomposition of the green part of the plant provides soil nutrition, saturation with many useful substances. Due to this, the quality and fertility of the soil is significantly increased.
In addition, the radish grows quickly, and in one warm season it can be planted up to 3 times in one area. And if you do not remove the plant and leave it for the winter, then in early spring, after the snow melts, the soil will be ready and fertilized for the new harvest season.
Special preparation of the soil for sowing fertilizer is not required; you can only slightly loosen the top layer of the soil. Then, after 2-3 weeks, when the ground is leveled, you can start sowing.
There are no specific rules for planting seeds. They can be sown in rows or in bulk. It all depends on the time and financial capabilities of the summer resident. For a more economical use of seeds, you can mark rows every 15 cm and plant seeds in them by 2-4 cm.
If planting is carried out after August 15, the seed consumption should be doubled, since the growth of fertilizer may be slowed down
To save time, you can mix seeds with dry sand and loose, scatter them evenly over the area. The embedment depth should also not exceed 4 cm.
With any planting method, the seeds will give the first shoots in a few days. And in a month the fertilizer will be ready for collection and digging.
Oil radish will become an indispensable aid in the struggle for high yields. After the first procedure, the quality of the soil will increase markedly.
