Oculosan – indications, dosage, contraindications, interactions, side effects

Oculosan is used for the short-term treatment of redness and non-specific eye irritation. The drug in its composition contains two active substances in the form of naphazoline and zinc. The preparation narrows blood vessels and reduces pain, excessive tearing or burning. Oculosan comes in the form of over-the-counter eye drops.

Oculosan – indications and dosage

Oculosan is used for the short-term treatment of redness and non-specific eye irritation.

Dosage

  1. 1 drop into the conjunctival sac 3-4 × / d. After instillation, it is recommended to press the corner of the eye for 1-2 minutes.

Oculosan and contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Oculosan are:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. dry eye syndrome (especially Sjögren’s syndrome),
  3. angle-closure glaucoma,
  4. simultaneous use of MAO inhibitors and 10 days after discontinuing their use,
  5. do not use during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children.

Oculosan — eyesight

  1. Oculosan is for use in the eyes only.
  2. If symptoms worsen or do not improve after 2 days, a doctor should be consulted.
  3. Do not use Oculosan for a long time without medical advice, because after long-term use, the congestion may recur.
  4. Eye pain or visual disturbances are an indication for immediate discontinuation of treatment.
  5. The use of the drug requires special care and possible consultation with a doctor in the case of: patients with a predisposition to glaucoma; cardiovascular diseases (e.g., ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, arterial hypertension); overactive thyroid gland; pheochromocytoma; aneurysm; hyperglycemia.
  6. Oculosanz contains benzoxonium chloride.
  7. Soft contact lenses should not be worn when instilling the drug.
  8. Lenses can be put in at least 15 minutes after instillation.
  9. People driving motor vehicles should be especially careful, because Oculosan may in rare cases impair psychophysical fitness and the ability to drive and operate vehicles (e.g. blurred vision, pupil dilation may occur).
  10. It is contraindicated to use the preparation during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Oculosan – interactions

  1. Do not use Oculosan with MAO inhibitors and for 10 days after the end of treatment with these drugs (risk of hypertensive crisis) or tricyclic antidepressants (risk of increased spasm of blood vessels).
  2. In the case of topical application of other ophthalmic preparations, there should be a 15-minute time interval between consecutive administrations of drugs.

Oculosan – side effects

Local side effects may occur:

  1. mild burning,
  2. redness of the eye
  3. congestion,
  4. dryness of the eye mucosa,
  5. dilation of the pupil with a slight increase in intraocular pressure,
  6. very rarely, systemic effects may occur: increased heart rate, palpitations, hypertension, fatigue, tremors, sweating, headache.
