Octenisept is a liquid intended for disinfecting the skin with an antiseptic effect. Octenisept should be used externally to disinfect the skin, mucous membranes and various types of wounds. Available at a pharmacy without a prescription. It comes in the form of a liquid or an aerosol.

Octenisept – basic information

The active substance: octenidine, ethanol. Excipients: cocamidopropyl betaine, 30% solution, sodium D-gluconate, glycerol 85%, sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride, purified water.

Indications: skin disinfection before procedures, wounds, postoperative sutures, care of the umbilical cord stump. The drug has a bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal effect.

Octenisept is a disinfecting spray intended for use on the skin, wounds and mucous membranes. This preparation is an excellent alternative to the organic mercury or iodine compounds used so far. Octenisept is ready for use on wounds and membranes that tolerate it well; does not cause irritation. The use of the spray is painless, has a quick effect, and the effect lasts up to an hour. In addition, the active substances contained in the preparation are not absorbed, and the agent itself does not leave stains because it is colorless.

Octenisept spray – application

Octenisept has several uses. It is used in skin care, washing wounds and disinfecting them. It has an antiseptic effect and is used before and after surgery. The preparation is also used for the care of the umbilical cord stump, during gynecological examinations, catheterization and childbirth.

To sum up, the indications for the use of Octenisept include:

  1. catheterization,
  2. use in research: dermatology, urology, gynecology, venereology and intensive care units,
  3. venous and burn ulcers,
  4. infected wounds,
  5. vaginitis
  6. inflammation of the glans in men,
  7. diagnostic procedures in the area of ​​the urinary system,
  8. frequent rinsing of infected surgical wounds,
  9. rinsing abscesses of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and perianal abscesses,
  10. care for wounds and postoperative sutures,
  11. activities performed before, during and after childbirth,
  12. activities related to artificial insemination,
  13. pediatrics,
  14. oral cavity disinfection, e.g. after tooth extraction, or in people with aphthae.

Octanisept – how to use

It is recommended to use Octanisept undiluted. It is best to wash wounds with a syringe, while venous ulcers and burn wounds can be treated with a swab soaked in liquid. For rinsing the mouth, use no more than 20 ml of the preparation and rinse intensively for about 20 seconds. We do not swallow the preparation.

Octanisept – intimate infections of women

Octanisept can be used for intimate infections in women. If there is pain, burning and itching in the intimate parts, you can use the Pensept drug with an additional vaginal applicator. – has a wide spectrum of antibacterial and antifungal activity – pathogens most often responsible for problems in intimate infections, and is also effective in fighting the virus Herpes vaginalis. Octenisept + vaginal applicator is an over-the-counter treatment for intimate infections.

With an actively sexually active woman, when an intimate infection occurs, it is important to treat the partner as well. Men often have intimate infections asymptomatically, but they are a source of infection for their partners. Treating intimate infections together with your partner is therefore a good way to prevent future intimate infections.

These are the most common symptoms of inflammation of the intimate parts of women:

  1. vaginal discharge – foamy (indicates infection Trichomonas vagnalis), lumpy (indicates a fungal infection), an unsightly fishy smell (infection Gardnella vaginalis) brownish, greenish or yellowish discharge (mixed infection)
  2. itching of the vagina and vulva,
  3. pain during intercourse.

Octenisept – caesarean section wound

Caesarean section is one of the most frequently performed gynecological surgeries in recent years. Unfortunately, it is an operation that carries a risk of complications for the mother. One of them is infection of the caesarean section wound. In order to reduce the risk of infection and other wound-related complications, it is recommended to use disinfectants such as Octenisept at each dressing change.

Octenisept – characteristics of the preparation

The active substances in Octenisept are octenidine and phenoxyethanolwhich have bactericidal and fungicidal properties. It starts working immediately after administration of the drug.

Octenisept – contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Octenisept are:

  1. allergy to naoctenidine dihydrochloride, phenoxyethanol or any of the other ingredients of this drug,
  2. introduction of the drug into the tissue under pressure (tissue damage and local swelling may occur). Adequate drainage from the wound cavity should be provided (e.g. drainage, suction),
  3. applying the preparation to the inside of the ear and swallowing,
  4. use for rinsing the abdominal cavity (insufficient clinical trials).

Octenisept – warnings

  1. Avoid contact of Octenisept with the eyes,
  2. Octenisept should not be used simultaneously with antiseptics based on PVP-iodine (iodine povidone complex) on adjacent parts of the body, as this may cause the appearance of strong or even purple discoloration,
  3. Octenisept may form residues difficult to dissolve when used together with anionic washing agents or detergents.
  4. There are no studies on the effect of the drug on the ability to drive and use machines.

Octenisept – side effects

Like all drugs, Octenisept can also cause side effects, although they do not occur in all users of the preparation.

  1. Rarely, you may experience a feeling of warmth or a burning sensation after rinsing the vagina.
  2. When rinsing the mouth, the bitter taste lasts for about 1 hour due to the effect of the medicine.

Safety of octenisept use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Studies have shown that octenidine does not cross the placenta, which makes it suitable for pregnant women:

  1. The results of studies on the effectiveness of various agents in the treatment of vaginitis in hospitalized pregnant women. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Octenisept in the treatment of vaginosis in pregnant women in comparison to the routine drugs – neomycin / polymyxin B / nystatin, metronidazole or miconazole tablets. 1000 patients participated in the study. The results showed that Octenisept was the most effective antiseptic in the treatment of both bacterial vaginosis and vaginal candidiasis (p <0,001). The use of octenisept for one day led to a resolution of symptoms of bacterial vaginosis in 52% of women and symptoms of candidiasis in 38% of women.
  2. Efficacy and tolerance of topical antiseptic use – treatment of vaginal dysbiosis during pregnancy. 1156 pregnant women participated in the study, 109 of them were treated with octenisept. The effectiveness of the antiseptic in the treatment of dysbiosis and symptoms of bacterial vaginosis was assessed as good after 7 days and comparable to the results of treatment of non-pregnant women. The antiseptic was well tolerated by 109 patients – 5 of them experienced undesirable side effects, but all of them were classified as not related to antiseptic administration. There was no case of preterm labor in the group treated with Octenisept. Good tolerance of the antiseptic in pregnant women has been established. Octenisept has been assessed as a safe antiseptic.
