Obstetrician-gynecologist told how to overcome the shortage of pads

The expert listed several possible alternatives, and also described the pros and cons of each of them.

The rampant demand for pads in March 2022 led to the fact that these hygiene items disappeared from the shelves of some stores, and began to be sold at three times the price in online stores. The boom occurred against the backdrop of news that there are practically no gasket manufacturers in Russia, and imported products will be limited.

Svetlana Markova, obstetrician-gynecologist of the highest category, head of the gynecological department of the polyclinic of the Joint Hospital with a Polyclinic of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, spoke about possible alternatives.

Tampons

Since they are the most popular alternative, it is likely that they can also be difficult.

Of the advantages, it can be noted that they are compact, invisible and hygienic. They do not damage the hymen, allow you to play sports and swim, and are also convenient when traveling. When using them, the skin in the vulva area is not irritated and allergic reactions do not occur.

Cons:

  • Tampons must be carefully sized and changed regularly (every 2-3 hours) to prevent toxic shock syndrome.

  • The introduction of tampons (especially those that do not have an applicator) requires the utmost hygiene.

  • They change the microbiocenosis of the vagina (the natural microflora is disturbed).

  • They can not be used in the postpartum period and after surgical interventions on the cervix.

menstrual cups

Pros: cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Cons:

  • difficulties in removing and installing bowls,

  • the introduction of the bowl requires the most careful hygiene,

  • possible traumatization of the vaginal mucosa and pain,

  • you need to choose depending on the volume of the vagina,

  • can not be used by virgins.

Reusable pads, briefs, tampons

The safest and most physiological means of personal hygiene for a woman are still disposable sanitary napkins. Reusable pads, reusable menstrual panties and reusable tampons raise big questions about their sterility, I believe that these products are unacceptable for use.

Combined oral contraceptives

Medicine is developing, and already at present, with the help of combined oral contraceptives, blood loss during menstruation can be reduced or even delayed.

There is a prolonged intake of COCs according to the following scheme: depending on the appointments of a specialist, a woman takes one tablet for 63 or 84 days in a row, then takes a 7-day break. Thus, menstruation will occur 3-4 times a year. This method is physiological for the female body and reduces the need for hygiene products.
