Obolon is one of the most famous Ukrainian beer brands. According to statistics, the drink occupies 2,6% of the Ukrainian beer market. This beer is consumed by every fifth inhabitant of Ukraine. Obolon exports its products to 40 countries.
Historical reference. The brewery, later called Obolon, was built in such a way as to open it for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The enterprise was conceived as the best in the industry, therefore, even in order to find a place for the future plant, Czech specialists were invited. First of all, they began to look for water. The best, softest and most delicious was the water from an artesian well in Obolon, a district of Kiev, located on the banks of the Dnieper.
Equipment for the enterprise was also purchased in Czechoslovakia. Therefore, the products of the Kiev Brewery No. 3 were in no way inferior to the best European beers. After 6 years, on the basis of several breweries, the Obolon Brewery and Non-Alcoholic Association was created. In 1989, Obolon was headed by A. V. Slobodyan, a specialist who had worked at the plant since its opening. In the same year, Zhigulevskoe beer produced at the enterprise was exported to England for the first time, where experts noted its excellent quality and taste.
Since then, despite all the problems in the economy, Obolon’s production volumes have been constantly growing, and the geography of exports has expanded. By 2013, the company supplied beer to the CIS countries, Europe, the USA, Canada, and negotiated with Chinese businessmen. Obolon occupied up to 2% of the Russian beer market and up to 7% of the Moscow one.
However, everything changed in 2014, when the export of Obolon to Russia was stopped. For several years, the company suffered huge losses. But the permanent president of Obolon, A. V. Slobodyan, found a way out: since the summer of 2015, Obolon has been produced under license at the enterprises of CJSC Moscow Brewing Company.
According to brand manager S. Dorogany, the popularity of Obolon is explained by the fact that this beer is brewed exclusively from natural ingredients. The company itself produces malt, and of such quality that foreign brewers are willing to buy it.
