Obese children – regular customers of fast food.

American food concerns spend 10 billion dollars every year to let the youngest consumers learn about their products. However, reports indicate that as many as 98% of them are foods rich in fat, sugar and sodium. Effect? Over the past three decades, the number of children suffering from obesity has tripled.

Researchers from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Kansas Medical Center designed the research thanks to which we learned more about the impact of marketing concerns on the consciousness of the child. They were put under a microscope in the research 20 children (aged 10-14), half of whom were obese. The questionnaire method was used as well as functional brain imaging (fMRI). Children were shown 120 company logos – half of them were food trademarks.

It turned out that when the logo of a food company was displayed, more in obese children than in healthy ones, the region of the brain responsible for reward was activated. In healthy children, on the other hand, when these signs were exposed, the region was activated associated with self-control. The researchers therefore concluded that obese children are less resistant to the marketing of food companies. They also indicate that working on self-control may be the key to the solution.
