Woo-xia-pyan. Don’t worry, we’ll explain everything. Even from afar. So, the era of ancient strife. Great kings fight for the heart of a beautiful princess, for dominance over rich lands and millions of lives. A young slave, endowed with the gift of «outrunning the wind», receives an order to save his king from death … Here there is both the harsh path of a warrior, and the great fate destined by a sorceress … All this is called by the Chinese the wu-xia-pyan genre, which unites a historical film, movies about martial arts and fantasy. The phenomenon is original, which attracts the viewer: the Chinese gave the world not only Confucius and the “economic miracle for a cup of rice”, but also endemic films that “grow” exclusively in this area.
Chen Kaige. The situation of exclusivity is strengthened by the fact that the author of this “piang” is the famous Chen Kaige, who opened the fashion for Chinese cinema outside Southeast Asia with his film “Farewell My Concubine”.
Tai-guk-gi. This Korean expression means something like «military brotherhood». What is relevant for the «Oath». After all, for the sake of cinema, children of different, warring peoples for thousands of years united in it: a Chinese director, an American producer, Korean, Chinese and Japanese artists. The Oath is an optimistic example of globalization.
(And sorry about our Chinese and our Korean.)
