The idea that the birth of a person is accompanied by psychological trauma was first expressed by the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. However, this idea was developed in 1924 in his book The Trauma of Birth and its Significance for Psychoanalysis by his student and colleague, the Austrian psychoanalyst Otto Rank.

However, this idea was developed in 1924 in his book The Trauma of Birth and its Significance for Psychoanalysis by his student and colleague, the Austrian psychoanalyst Otto Rank. He drew attention to the fact that patients often report dreams and fantasies in which the very first (traumatic) separation of the infant from the mother is reproduced. And he described how unconsciously they use the psychoanalytic situation in order to repeat and get rid of the trauma of birth.
