«Angels of Death from Lainz». Nurses murdered their patients
Although this is a very unpleasant thought, not all nurses are concerned about the patient’s health and have good hearts. History knows quite a few cases when they turned out to be serial killers. Nurses sometimes killed children and seniors. This was the case with the infamous “Angels of Death of Lainz”.
Waltraud Wagner, Irene Leidolf, Maria Gruber and Stefanija Mayer were employees of the Lainz hospital in Vienna. It was Walfraud who initiated the murderous practice that lasted for the next years. The woman recruited Irene, Maria and Stefania to take their patients’ lives together. The murderers chose the elderly, often sick, although in many cases they were not patients on their deathbeds.
Modus Operandi It wasn’t complicated: nurses pumped water into the patients’ lungs or gave them large doses of insulin or morphine. As «The Guardian» writes, people died in agony as a result of this practice.

«Angels of Death from Lainz». Good faith euthanasia? There could be as many as 200 victims
The “Angels of Death of Lainz” murdered patients between 1983 and 1989. Until a doctor working in the same hospital heard the women sitting in a bar brag about their deeds. The man passed the information over to the police and an investigation began.
The women had argued from the beginning that the murders were in fact acts of mercy. Taking the lives of patients was supposed to free them from suffering. Investigators, however, did not believe these translations. Ultimately, the nurses managed to prove 49 homicides. However, it is likely that there were many more. Unofficially, there are even reports of 200 deaths, for which the “Angels of Death” were responsible.
The “Angels of Death” are released. Their identities have been changed
Ultimately, Waltraud Wagner and Irene Leidolf were sentenced to life imprisonment. Maria Gruber and Stefanija Mayer, however, received milder sentences: 15 and 20 years, respectively. In 2008, the court decided to drastically mitigate the sentence of Wagner and Leidorf. Due to good behavior, women were conditionally released.
Gruber and Mayer had been released from prison a few years earlier. The women’s names were changed so that they would not be persecuted for their actions.
