Polish nurses and midwives are on strike to change their difficult situation. The staff is overloaded – they work in several places, several jobs. “It is no longer funny anymore and it should not be taken lightly by the government, and it is,” says Krystyna Ptok in the Onet Rano program, chairwoman of the National Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives.

The nurses are on strike. “It stops being funny right now”
Nurses in Poland are on strike. The previous strike took place on May 12. As Krystyna Ptok says, shortages in nursing staff threaten the security of Polish society.
– It ceases to be funny anymore and should not be disregarded by the government side, and it is – says in the Onet Rano program.
Ptok draws attention to the average age of nurses in our country. In 2027, when 7 percent is to be allocated to the health care system, GDP, nurses will be 57 on average. A generation gap is observed in this professional group. As Krystyna Ptok says, nurses are getting older. Moreover, we are now entering a period when at least 10 people will retire every year. 500 nurses, while the system only includes 3. 600.
– We must undertake activities that are not popular in public perception. We count on the support and approval of our actions. Otherwise, we will lead to a situation where the aging society, which requires more and more services, will be left without nursing care – adds Krystyna Ptok.

The nurse also talks about the difficulties associated with the work of a nurse in Poland.
– We work in several places, for several jobs. It is not good for us or for the state as a society, because medical personnel should be rested – he says.
More and more patients are under the care of nurses.
– The decreasing number of nurses in hospital wards means that we are again taking care of an increasing number of patients. The health minister abolished the employment standards for nurses during the pandemic, he says. He also admits that it happens that for 8-10 patients there are two doctors, two paramedics and two nurses, and sometimes they have to be helped alone. «It is dangerous» comments Krystyna Ptok.
