A pioneering operation on a European scale will take place at the Bródno Hospital. Thanks to the cooperation with neurosurgeons from San Francisco, a patient with brain glioma will be given a drug whose nanoparticles will go directly to the tumor.
Prof. Mirosław Ząbek, who will conduct the procedure, emphasizes that this operation is a new way of treating certain diseases of the nervous system. –The drug substance is administered in a completely controlled manner, directly to the place where the disease is present. The whole human body does not have to receive medications, which only a small percentage passes to the brain, the specialist explains in an interview with TVN 24.
The procedure itself will resemble an MRI scan. Doctors will see how the tumor is covered with the drug substance at all times. In the future, similar operations may be a chance for patients struggling with many diseases, incl. Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. Now, however, specialists will use it in the treatment of glioblastoma, which is the cancer with the worst prognosis.
The patient herself, who has already used all possible therapies: surgery, radio- and chemotherapy, is not afraid of the procedure and is full of optimism.
This type of operation in Europe will be carried out for the first time. Similar attempts have already been made in the United States.
