Note – cyanobacteria in a popular bathing area

The wild beach in Nieporęt on the Zegrze Reservoir was closed. Cyanobacteria have been spotted in the bathing area, which the inhabitants of the area eagerly used. Their toxins can be dangerous to human and animal health, and in extreme cases – cause death.

The bathing area was closed on Monday because, as Krzysztof Jaworski from the Water Voluntary Rescue Service said, cyanobacteria were noticed there. Other bathing areas by the reservoir, including those in Serock and Wieliszew, are still open. If, however, what the rescuers noticed are indeed cyanobacteria, this situation may change within a few hours, as the high temperature promotes the rapid reproduction of these organisms. The wind also helps to spread them.

The Sanitary Inspectorate has already been notified about the case, which is to check whether these dangerous bacteria are present in Zalew Zegrzyński.

Why are cyanobacteria so dangerous? Although they do not cause serious infections, contact with them can be fatal. All because of the toxins released by the cyanobacteria into the water. Hepatotoxins can cause severe liver damage, sometimes even internal hemorrhage. However, this is not the end of the arsenal of cyanobacteria – neurotoxins can disturb the functioning of the nervous system, which in turn affects the work of muscles. These include the respiratory muscles, the uncontrolled contractions of which lead to suffocation.
