Not an operation or death: what South Korean intelligence found out about Kim Jong-un’s condition

In April, the media reported on Kim Jong Un’s heart surgery, which prevented him from appearing in public for a long time. However, South Korean intelligence has denied this version.

Kim Jong Un has not appeared in public since April 12. The leader of North Korea missed many important events for the country, which alarmed the world community. The media conducted an investigation and found out that the politician underwent heart surgery and is now recovering.

Later, shocking news emerged of Kim Jong-un’s death as a result of an unsuccessful surgery.

The North Korean authorities ignored all discussions and speculations about the head of state. And on May 2, local media showed fresh photos with Kim Jong Un, thereby refuting rumors of his death. The footage of the DPRK leader was published in newspapers and also shown on central television. However, skeptics agree that the authorities showed archival images because the video from the ceremony, in which Kim Jong-un allegedly participated, was never released.

South Korean intelligence conducted its investigation and subsequently denied rumors that the North Korean leader underwent heart surgery. The head of the South Korean intelligence agency, Suh Hoon, spoke to the parliamentary committee, where he said there was no reason to believe that Kim Jong-un had health problems.

This year, the head of state has appeared in public 17 times, up from the usual 50. According to intelligence reports, this may be due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, although not a single case of the disease has been officially recorded in North Korea.

“Kim Jong-un has focused on internal affairs such as military forces and party state meetings, and the problems with the spread of Covid-19 further limit his public activities,” MP Kim Byung-Ki said.
