Norsept – use, contraindications, dosage. Side effects of an antibacterial drug

Norsept is an antibacterial drug used generally from the fluoroquinolone group. A chemotherapeutic drug used to treat bacterial infections. The preparation is recommended for upper and lower urinary tract infections (e.g. pyelitis, chronic prostatitis). The drug is available by prescription in the form of tablets.

Norsept indications for use

Indications: treatment of complicated and uncomplicated, acute and chronic infections of the upper and lower urinary tract, such as cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis, chronic prostatitis, as well as infections associated with urological surgery, neurogenic bladder or kidney stones caused by bacteria sensitive to norfloxacin.

Norsept and contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Norsept are:

  1. allergic to any ingredient of Norsept or other quinolones.
  2. You cannot use Norsept during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  3. Can not be used in children and growing adolescents.

Dosage Norsept

Adults:

  1. Uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections (e.g. cystitis): 400 mg twice daily for 2 days.
  2. Urinary tract infections: 400 mg twice daily for 2-7 days.
  3. Chronic recurrent urinary tract infections: 400 mg twice daily for up to 2 weeks. If the doctor considers that the improvement is sufficient within the first 12 weeks of treatment, he may reduce the dose to 4 mg once a day.
  4. No dose adjustment is necessary in elderly patients with normal renal function. In elderly patients with impaired renal function, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage, depending on the severity of the infection and kidney function (creatinine clearance).

Adults with kidney problems:

  1. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dose of Norsept depending on the degree of kidney failure. If the creatinine clearance (calculated per 1,73 m2) is less than 30 ml / min, this dose is usually 400 mg once a day.

Method of drug administration:

Use Norsept orally. The tablets should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal or milk. Drink with a glass of water. Multivitamin or other supplements containing iron or zinc, antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, preparations containing sucralfate or didanosine should not be taken within 2 hours of taking the preparation.

Norsept – warnings

  1. The use of Norsepto in people with a deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is possible only after the doctor assesses the risk-benefit ratio in each case.
  2. Do not use Norsept in growing children and adolescents due to insufficient safety studies (risk of arthropathy).
  3. This drug, like other fluoroquinolones, may cause inflammation or damage to tendons (Achilles rupture), especially in the elderly and those taking glucocorticoids.
  4. If you have: diseases of the central nervous system (epilepsy, lowered seizure threshold, history of seizures), cardiac arrhythmias or are at risk of their occurrence (history or family history of ECG QTc prolongation, bradycardia, arrhythmias, use of antiarrhythmic drugs), tendons, related to previous quinolone treatment, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, consult your doctor before taking this medicine
  5. Norsept can lead to side effects that can affect your ability to drive and use machines.
  6. Do not use the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Norsept with other drugs

If you are taking the following substances:

  1. cyclosporine,
  2. oral anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin)
  3. glibenklamid (sulfonylomcznik),
  4. probencyd,
  5. nitrofurantoin,
  6. metoclopramide,
  7. multivitamins and other medications containing iron or zinc
  8. antacids,
  9. medicines containing magnesium or aluminum
  10. sucralfate,
  11. antiretroviral drugs (e.g. didanosine)
  12. xanthine derivatives (e.g. theophylline, pentoxifylline),
  13. caffeine,
  14. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen, ketoprofen, fenbufen)

Norsept – side effects

Norsept is a preparation that can cause, among others: headache, dizziness and rash, anorexia, dysgeusia, sleep disturbance, agitation, increased psychomotor activity, euphoria, confusion, depression, allergic reactions, angioedema, dyspnoea, urticaria, vasculitis, arthritis, interstitial nephritis, severe edema angioedema (swelling of the mouth, tongue, throat impeding breathing), low blood pressure, anaphylactic shock as well as skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders (erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis and life-threatening Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis).
