Normalac is a preparation used to treat constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. The active substance of the drug is lactulose, which is not digested in the small intestine and reaches the large intestine in the same form. Lactulose also causes acidification of the contents of the large intestine. The preparation is in the form of a syrup for oral use and is available without a prescription.

Normalac – indications and dosage

Normalac is a syrup recommended for the treatment of:

  1. constipation
  2. hepatic encephalopathy.

Drug dosage

Normalac is a syrup to be taken by mouth. Do not exceed the recommended dose of the preparation as it may pose a threat to your life or health. You can use the medicine with juices, water or fruit.

  1. Adults. 15-45 ml / d, depending on the patient’s reaction.
  2. Kids. 5-15 ml / d.
  3. Babies from the 1st month of life 0,5-2 ml / kg b.w./d.

Normalac and contraindications

There are the following contraindications to the use of the drug:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. galactosemia,
  3. bowel obstruction,
  4. galactose intolerance,
  5. lactase deficiency,
  6. glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Normalac – warnings

  1. A doctor should be consulted if the constipation persists after a few days.
  2. Patients with diabetes should consult a doctor before taking the preparation, because high doses may have an effect on blood glucose levels.
  3. Normalac does not cause you to gain weight.
  4. Using too high doses of the drug may cause diarrhea and electrolyte disturbances.
  5. People who are intolerant to galactose, fructose, lactase deficiency or malabsorption of glucose-galactose should not use this preparation due to the presence of galactose and lactose in the preparation.
  6. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before using the drug.

Normalac with other medications

  1. The lactulose in Normalac lowers the pH of the colon (acidification of the contents of the large intestine) and may therefore reduce the effect of drugs whose release is dependent on the pH of the colon.
  2. Normalac does not affect the absorption of calcium and iron salts, so it can be safely used in deficiencies of these elements.

Normalac – side effects

Taking Normalac can cause:

  1. temporary flatulence (especially at the beginning of use),
  2. stomach pain,
  3. nausea,
  4. vomiting.
