Nora Ephron: “The main thing is to be the heroine of your life, not a victim”

“Sleepless in Seattle”, “You’ve Got Mail”, “When Harry Met Sally”, “Michael”, “Julie and Julia” – her films can be reviewed endlessly. They pull out of the deepest despair and save when there is nowhere to wait for salvation. Nora Ephron is a cult director and writer who has given voice to female strength, vulnerability and humor.

1. “It’s incredible how cool women can change their lives at 40, 50 years old, learn a new profession and succeed in it. Men don’t: they usually buy a yacht or something like that in such cases.

2. “… And then the dream is broken into a million little pieces. The dream is dying. But it leaves you with a choice: from now on, you can live reality or run away from it again like a fool, and continue in the same spirit until the next dream breaks.

3. “Why didn’t it occur to me that what I thought was love was just my own highly developed talent for making lemonade? Why did I forget that life is full of other possibilities, including the possibility of eventually falling in love again?

4. “Beware of men who cry. Yes, they know how to feel, but, as a rule, the only feelings that excite them are their own.

5. “There comes a time when you realize that you can no longer delay. You see how people around you get sick and die, and you realize that sooner or later the same thing will happen to you. So if you really want to do something, it’s better to start as soon as possible.”

6. “When you are drawn to someone, it means that your subconscious is drawn to their subconscious, subconscious. Those are what we used to call fate, in fact – just two neuroses who know that they are the perfect couple.

7. “The most important thing is to be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”

8. “When you slip on a banana peel, you get laughed at. But when you tell others how it happened, you are already laughing. Here’s a way to be a hero and not the victim of a joke.”

9. “An acquaintance complained to me about his mother. He is 70 years old and his mother is long dead. I sat and thought: incredible! He complains about the things she did to him when he was a child. There are also a lot of divorced people around – five years have passed and they are still full of anger, although they should be grateful that they got divorced. They like to feel like victims. If I were young, I would probably advise you to go to a psychologist. But when you get older, I want to say: come to your senses. Get it out of your head, after all.”

10. “There is so much time, effort and money spent on hair care that sometimes I think: not having to think about hair is one of the underestimated benefits of death.”

11. “When your kids are in their teens, it’s important to get a dog so that at least someone in the house is happy when you come home.”

12. “I look out the window and see the lights, and the horizon line, and people who are in a hurry about their business in all directions, busy with the eternal search – someone is looking for work, someone is love, and someone is the best in light chocolate chip cookies. And my heart, when I look at all this, dances a little dance.
