Eplerenone is a medicinal product that is used as a combination therapy with standard treatment in the case of heart failure disease and to prevent worsening of the disease. It has diuretic and blood pressure lowering properties.

The active substance in Eplerenone

Nonpres is a preparation produced by the Polish company Polfa Pabianice SA in the form of coated tablets. There are 20 or 30 tablets in a pack, each containing 25 mg or 50 mg of eplerenone, depending on the pack. In addition to the aforementioned substance, the medicinal product also includes: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose, sodium lauryl sulfate, talc, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, macrogol 400, polysorbate 80, titanium dioxide, yellow and red iron oxide.

The main active ingredient of Nonpres is eplerenonewhich is a synthetic steroid that blocks the action of aldosterone, a substance that controls blood pressure and heart function. Its increased amount can lead to heart failure.

Application and dosage of Nonpres

Eplerenone is used – most often in combination with other drugs, e.g. beta-blockers – in the treatment of heart failure or mild symptoms to prevent worsening of the disease. It is used especially in people who have had a heart attack. Always take Eplerenone exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. It is most often taken along with other medications that are used to treat heart failure.

The starting dose, unless your doctor tells you otherwise, is 1 tablet (25 mg) once a day. The dosage is generally increased after a period of four weeks to 50 mg per day. The tablets may be taken with or without food. Eplerenone must not be taken by children, adolescents and people with severe kidney disease. In the case of mild kidney disease, a lower dose is recommended. The effects of Eplerenone have not been evaluated in pregnant women, therefore pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor beforehand.

When not to use Eplerenone?

Eplerenone should not be used in the case of allergy to any of the ingredients of the preparation and in the case of:

  1. high levels of potassium in the blood
  2. severe kidney or liver disease and if you are taking certain anti-fungal medicines (ketoconazole, itraconazole), anti-HIV medicines (nelfinavir, ritonavir), antibiotics (clarithromycin, telithromycin).

It should be remembered that it is necessary to notify the doctor if you suffer from any diseases or take other medications.

Possible side effects and side effects with Eplerenone

Each drug can cause certain side effects and side effects, but not every person may experience them. In case of any undesirable effects after the use of Eplerenone, it is necessary to consult a physician.

Occasionally, side effects may occur, such as:

  1. myocardial infarction,
  2. dizziness,
  3. fainting
  4. increase in the amount of potassium in the blood
  5. infections,
  6. cough,
  7. constipation
  8. diarrhea,
  9. low blood pressure,
  10. rash,
  11. abnormal kidney function,
  12. muscle pain,
  13. swelling of the face, tongue and throat
  14. difficulty swallowing
  15. insomnia,
  16. dehydration,
  17. Hypothyroidism,
  18. nephritis.
