Non-dysentery colitis (colitis amoebica)
The clinical picture is dominated by mild mucous diarrhea, flatulence and abdominal pain, weakness and weight loss. Endoscopic examination reveals shallow ulcerations in the large intestine, especially in the caecum and ascending colon. Although there is no macroscopic blood in the stool, virtually all patients have a positive occult blood test. This form may precede amoebic dysentery or resolve spontaneously.
