According to the government’s decision, from March 28, there is no obligation to undergo isolation in the event of a positive test for the presence of the coronavirus. But what if we received the information about the infection a moment earlier, e.g. on the weekend (March 26-27)? Is isolation obligatory or are we exempt from it? We asked the Ministry of Health about it.
- On March 28, one of the last covid restrictions was lifted: wearing masks, quarantine for housemates and travelers, as well as isolation of the infected
- People diagnosed with COVID-19 will be able to be sent on sick leave and recommend self-isolation; however, it will not be obligatory
- Some people may have received a PCR test result just before March 28. Their isolation could therefore be shortened
- However, as explained by the Ministry of Health, patients infected with the coronavirus (with a positive PCR test result) must stay at home for seven days before March 28

COVID-19: changes to restrictions from March 28
On Thursday, March 24, during a press conference, Health Minister Adam Niedzielski announced that from March 28 there will be changes to the existing covid restrictions.
It was about the obligation to wear protective masks, and the quarantine for housemates and travelers was also supposed to stop. There will also no longer be a requirement for a seven-day isolation test if the COVID-19 test is positive.
The COVID-19 Real-Time PCR test can be performed at selected drive thru points of the Diagnostics network.
Exemption “instead of” isolation
Theoretically, this means that if we become infected, we are not obligated to go into isolation. However, as specified by the Ministry of Health, self-isolation when contracting COVID-19 is still recommended. In practice, if the doctor sends us for a PCR test (and from April 1 only he will be able to issue such a referral), and the test gives a positive result, we will be referred for a sick leave. Whether we stay at home then depends on us and our social responsibility.
- End of quarantine obligation. Will the person with a positive result be able to go to work?
The change regarding isolation entered into force on March 28, which means that people who have performed the PCR test on that day will not have to stay at home obligatorily.
Positive PCR test before March 28
However, there are doubts about performing the test earlier, e.g. on March 26 or 27, and receiving the results before March 28 or just on the Monday, when the new rules came into force. Is isolation imposed on the positive person? If so, is March 28 taken down (canceled)? Will it take one or two days (depending on when the positive result was obtained) or a full seven days?
Last week we asked the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate about it. As it turned out, its employees, like us, used only guesswork, as the regulation, which details the new rules, has yet to be published.
– We do not yet have any information about the insulation that was or will be applied before March 28. It all depends on whether the regulation will have retroactive effect. If not, these isolations will take place in the current mode, i.e. a seven-day period. But this is anecdotal information. As long as we do not have a regulation, it is difficult to say anything more specific. At the moment, we know as much as we heard in the media. We are waiting for an official document – an employee of the sanitary inspection told us.

We also sent the question about isolation to the Ministry of Health before March 28. We did not receive the answer until Monday (March 28), that is on the day the changes in the scope of the restrictions entered into force. How did the ministry respond to the matter?
– In accordance with the regulation of the Council of Ministers of March 25, 2022 on the establishment of certain restrictions, orders and bans in connection with an epidemic (Journal of Laws, item 679), from March 28, 2022, no new quarantines and isolations are imposed . Whereas persons taking place, before the entry into force of the above-mentioned regulations, quarantine, isolation or isolation at home are obliged to terminate them on the current terms, i.e. they are not canceled – informs Jarosław Rybarczyk, chief specialist in the ministerial communications office.
