Older people do not tolerate familiar appeals in the style of «dear», «darling», as well as questions like «We don’t want to upset our loved ones, do we?» Becca Levi, a psychologist at Yale University (USA), studied the impact of the patronizing communication style of doctors and relatives on the health of the elderly and found out that such a manner is detrimental to their well-being. It reminds of helplessness, causes resentment, aggression and thus shortens life. Conversely, a warm and respectful attitude maintains self-esteem and interest in everything new, improves the quality of life and prolongs it.
