Nizoral for the treatment of dandruff. Is it effective?

Nizoral is used in the treatment and prevention of scalp dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and tinea versicolor. The active substance of the preparation is ketoconazole. The product is in the form of a medicated shampoo and is available over the counter in pharmacies.

ACTION

Nizoral is an antifungal drug, an imidazole derivative.

Nizoral – indications and dosage

Nizoral is recommended for the treatment and prevention of:

  1. scalp dandruff,
  2. seborrheic dermatitis,
  3. tinea versicolor.

Dosage

Apply the preparation on the diseased skin, massage to form foam, leave for about 5 minutes and rinse.

  1. Treatment and prevention of scalp dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Treatment: 2 × / week for 2 weeks Prophylaxis: 1 × / 2 weeks
  2. Treatment and prevention of tinea versicolor. Treatment: 1x / day for 5 days. Prophylaxis: before the summer period 1 × / day for 3 days.

Nizoral and contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation is a contraindication to the use of Nizoral.

Nizoral – warnings

  1. Avoid contact of Nizoral shampoo with the eyes.
  2. Use with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  3. The use of Nizoral shampoo may cause (rarely) increased hair loss.

Nizoral with other substances

The use of topical corticosteroids in the form of a cream, ointment or liquid is not a contraindication to starting the preparation.

Nizoral – side effects

These may occur during the use of Nizoral shampoo: local skin irritation (itching, redness), oily or excessively dry hair, in rare cases hair discoloration.
