Nits are lice eggs that are often mistaken for dandruff. Lice lay eggs on the hair, fixing them with a special secretion. This discharge makes it much more difficult to get rid of the nits from the hair and often the only solution is to cut the hair short. However, such radical steps are not always necessary. Learn about home remedies to get rid of nits.
What are nits?
Nits are the eggs that lice lay and attach with special secretions to the hair. Knowing what the nits look like will allow for a quick response and treatment that can prevent you from completely cutting your hair. The nits are oval in shape and surrounded by a thick white or white-yellow coating. The nits are closed with a lid. The size of the nits depends on the species of lice that lay their eggs. However, it can be concluded that the size of the nits is in the range from 0,5 to 1,5 mm. The eggs of the head lice are small, shiny, and are usually laid right at the base of the hair. Nits are often mistaken for dandruff, but the differences between the two are quite clear. Dandruff, unlike oval and convex nits, is characterized by a flat and irregular shape. In addition, dandruff can be easily shaken out of the head, but nits, due to their attachment, not necessarily. In addition, dandruff is located all over the head, while nits are easiest to find just behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, much less often on the most visible top of the head. The nits don’t move. Only in the larval stage do they start making their first movements.
Getting rid of nits is not easy. When attached to the hair, it is difficult to comb or rinse. So let’s protect your hair against lice to avoid the appearance of nits. To do this, use Lice Out – a spray that prevents head lice.
A way to deal with nits – apple cider vinegar
One way to get rid of nits is the apple cider vinegar rub, which has been used for generations. The vinegar prevents nits from sticking to the hair structure. The acid causes the nits to dry out and fall off the hair shaft. Acetic acid also kills adult lice, so we can be sure that new nits will not get deposited on the hair. To make a nits rub, the apple cider vinegar should be diluted 1: 1 in warm water. The lotion should be rubbed into the hair and scalp until we get rid of the problem. Usually the treatment takes about a week.
The way to nits – essential oils
Essential oils are another option to get rid of nits and head lice. The most recommended oils are tea tree, lavender, coconut, anise and jasmine oils. Lice hate these odors, and the oils are insecticidal. The treatment consists of rubbing a mixture of essential oils and olive oil into the hair. The mixture should be kept on the head for about 30-40 minutes, and then thoroughly washed off. In order to make sure that the problem of nits is solved, it is worth adding a few drops of essential oils to the shampoo in subsequent washes.

The way to the nits – garlic
Garlic is a vegetable known for its multiple health properties. It is also a proven method for nits in the hair. It is enough to put a head of garlic through the press, add half a liter of warm water and leave the mixture for 8 hours. Then the mixture should be strained through a strainer, and then sprinkled on the hair or rubbed into the hair. After eight hours, the head should be thoroughly washed. Unfortunately, the strong garlic aroma is difficult to overcome with even the most aromatic shampoo.
A way to deal with nits – brushing out
All of the above methods are effective in neutralizing nits stuck to the hair. However, in order to get rid of the dead nits stuck to the hair, it should be thoroughly combed with a special comb. You can also comb the nits without using additional preparations, but you need to do it very carefully, brushing it strand by strand, starting from the root of the hair. The nits should be combed over the unfolded paper or the rubbish bin, because they must go to the bin immediately after combing, so as not to pose a threat to other household members.
