COVID-19 is milder in the vaccinated

The main infectious agents in the current COVID-19 wave are Omikron BA.4 and BA.5. While these coronavirus sub-variants are highly contagious, significant levels of antibodies in the population limit severe disease cases and deaths. We owe this situation to vaccinations and the natural immunity obtained after contracting the earlier variants of the coronavirus.

The modified Omikron does not seem to be more dangerous than the previous versions of the virus. Variations BA.4 and BA.5, however, have some advantages over Omicron BA.2 due to the ability to avoid the body’s immune response to infection. Health experts warn people who are fully vaccinated with three doses of BA.4 and BA.5 also risk getting sick. In this case, however, the symptoms of the disease should be relatively mild.

Omicron in the vaccinated. What are the symptoms?

COVID-19 infection is not excluded in people who have received two or three doses of the vaccine. Nevertheless, the vaccinated are protected against the most serious complications of coronavirus infection. According to the Norwegian study and the ZOE Covid Study application in fully vaccinated subjects, the following symptoms of infection with Omikron BA.4 and BA.5 are most commonly observed:

1. persistent cough – one of the classic symptoms of coronavirus infection, affects an average of four out of 10 people with COVID-19; is a very dry cough that occurs frequently in a patient, repeated attacks of coughing may occur many times a day;
2. runny nose – a runny nose is one of the three most common symptoms (apart from cough and fatigue) reported by patients since the beginning of the Omicron wave;
3. fatigue – extreme fatigue was also common with earlier variants of the coronavirus, it usually lasts for 5-8 days, and no relief is provided by rest or a good night’s sleep;
4. sore throat – according to the ZOE COVID application, which is used to self-report symptoms of coronavirus infection, up to 60 percent infected people complain of a sore throat; this symptom most often appears in the initial stages of the disease, also in the vaccinated;
5. headache – now more common than fever and loss of taste or smell; COVID-19 patients suffer from moderate to severe headaches that may be throbbing or piercing;
6. muscle pains – were reported by patients in the case of all mutations of the coronavirus, in the case of Omikron the most commonly referred to is pain in the area of ​​the lumbar spine; myalgia is common in the early stages of the disease and lasts for several days;
7. fever – common in 40 percent people with confirmed coronavirus; the temperature above 19 degrees C may prove the incidence of COVID-65 in people under 37,8; in the case of people over 65 years of age or very thin, a sign of the disease is sometimes the measurement of 37,4 degrees Celsius;
8. sneezing – according to Norwegian researchers, sneezing, like fever, is less common than runny nose, cough or fatigue, but occurs in some people infected with the coronavirus;
