The 2021 National Health Test of Poles, carried out by Medonet, showed that our health index has decreased. The data on physical activity is also very disturbing. It turned out that as much as 47 percent. adults in Poland do not play sports at all. What is the threat of this? And why is it necessary to reverse this trend? We explain.
- A sedentary lifestyle is harmful in many ways. And it’s not just overweight and obesity
- Lack of exercise negatively affects the entire body. It can also lead to various ailments, including heart disease and diabetes
- Pro-health physical activity is not marathons or crossfit at all. A little effort, even a longer walk, is enough to improve your health
- More information can be found on the Onet homepage
The following material was created as part of the #Prepare for movement campaign, encouraging Poles to increase their physical activity. We want to lift Poles off the couch and show that movement – simple exercises and dancing – can change the quality of life. The action is carried out jointly with Zdrofit.
Why is lack of exercise dangerous? What are you facing?
Scientific research leaves no room for illusions: a sedentary lifestyle is harmful and sometimes even lethal. There was even an article published in the scientific journal “The Lancet” stating that no traffic by 500 percent increases the risk of premature death. It is a risk factor that ranks higher than smoking!
Among the potential and highly probable negative effects of lack of physical activity is also arterial hypertension (which, if left untreated, leads to e.g. heart attacks and strokes), heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

In addition, people leading a sedentary lifestyle also risk insomnia, worse memory, and a lack of fitness, resulting in problems with everyday activities, such as climbing stairs. Lack of exercise also has a negative effect on the body’s immunity.

What do you need traffic for? The doctor lists nine important reasons
Why is traffic so important? There has been a lot of research into the positive effects of physical activity. Some of them collected the medicine into one transparent whole. Małgorzata Stokowska-Wojda from the Zielona Góra Agreement. These are the nine key points:
- Working muscles use up glucose and help maintain proper body weight. The fact that it is not easy is evidenced by the plague of obesity.
- Lack of physical activity is an important risk factor for high cholesterol and triglycerides. From here, it is only a step to atherosclerosis.
- Movement reduces the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
- Exercise trains not only our muscles, but also the heart and lungs.
- By moving regularly, we stay physically fit for longer.
- In the elderly, the amount of muscle tissue is physiologically reduced, while the amount of fat increases. Being active helps slow down the process of muscle wasting.
- Movement has a de-stressing effect. During exercise, endorphins are released – the same substances that your body produces after eating mood-boosting chocolate.
- Regular physical activity is good for your beauty. In addition to a good figure without excess weight, it gives youthful flexibility to movements.
- Exercise in the fresh air improves brain oxygenation. It also significantly improves intellectual functioning.
Poles are not moving. The numbers speak for themselves
Although physical activity is crucial to a long healthy life, Poles are reluctant to get up from the couch. This was clearly demonstrated by the results of the National Health Test of Poles 2021 conducted by Medonet.
– Physical activity reduces stress, improves blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, promotes oxygenation of the body, strengthens bones and joints, regulates metabolism – says Dr. Anna Zimny-Zając, editor-in-chief of MedTvoiLokony. – Unfortunately, despite the fact that movement is one of the most effective means for a long life in health, as indicated by the National Test of Poles 2021, as much as 47 percent. adult Poles do not play any sport! I hope that the #prepare for movement action will change that and that more people will reach for one of the most effective, pleasant and available “therapies”, that is, regular physical activity.

What kind of move is a good move?
American scientists have recently looked at the iconic 10 thousand. steps that are to be the optimal dose of health-promoting exercise. It turned out that in fact, a daily walk can be shorter and still has enormous benefits for the body. Already seven thousand. steps taken each day reduce the risk of premature death.
The drug also writes about the fact that healthy physical activity is not strenuous exercise and murderous training. Małgorzata Stokowska-Wojda.
– Disciplines that require effort at the competitive level are strongly discouraged. These should be left to the professionals. The risky sports include long-distance running: marathons and half-marathons. Every now and then there are sudden deaths during such competitions. Cycling and walking are definitely recommended. Walking is a form of exercise that, depending on the pace and distance, is appropriate for everyone, at all levels of physical endurance. And inviting friends for a walk will make him a nice social meeting.
So in order to take advantage of the positive effects of movement, you do not have to tire yourself properly. Yoga, Pilates or classes for a healthy spine will also work well. And one more important point: doctors advise against one-off bursts. Instead of a big bike trip once a month, it is better to give up the elevator every day and climb the stairs to the apartment. Or just go for a walk.
