Can liposuction get rid of cellulite? At what age is it too early to think about plastic surgery, and at what age is it already too late? Aesthetic medicine is surrounded by a dense cloud of myths. We asked to dispel their plastic surgeon Natalia Manturova.

Myth 1.
The plastic surgeon doesn’t care what to do. If the patient wants a new nose, they will make a new nose.
Of course not. The participation of a psychologist at the stage of consultation and preparation for plastic surgery is simply necessary. Many large highly qualified professional clinics have such specialists on staff. Because sometimes patients in a state of crisis come to see a surgeon. They are ready to change the circle of friends, work, radically change their appearance. An experienced and highly professional plastic surgeon will send such a person for a consultation with a psychologist. If, after consulting a psychologist, there is even the slightest chance not to perform the operation, then the doctor will not do it. We must understand that we are not made of clay, and if the patient thinks about the expediency of the changes that have occurred to him and wants to “return everything”, then this will be quite problematic. Do not forget that plastic surgery is, first of all, surgery. And it involves anesthesia, which is an effect on the human nervous system. Before signing up for a consultation with a plastic surgeon, you should think about the fact that changes in appearance do not always improve the standard of living, bring love or a crowd of admirers to life.
Myth 2.
Liposuction will get rid of cellulite.
Liposuction is a technique that mechanically removes fat and does not solve the problem of cellulite. Fat deposits and the so-called «orange peel» are two different things. If you want to get rid of cellulite, you need to deal with the correction of body shape and skin quality. There are classic indications for liposuction. These are fat deposits — «riding breeches» in the thighs. Unfortunately, no sports activities will get rid of them. In such a case, liposuction will be used as the classic and only solution for reshaping. And as for full body shapes with cellulite coating, here liposuction will be a crippling operation. At best, it will introduce you to expenses, but will not bring the expected result.
Cellulite problems are successfully solved by cosmetologists, who have a huge range of cosmetology and laser equipment in their arsenal. They are able to smooth and tighten the skin, improve its turgor and elasticity.
Myth 3.
The next day after the operation, you can already go to a meeting with friends.
It all depends on the severity of the surgery. For example, abdominoplasty is a major operation that involves close monitoring of the patient’s postoperative period. In our clinics, we let you go home after plastic surgery on the second day, if there are no complications. But this does not mean that on the third day after a breast augmentation or liposuction, you can go to a party. For the first two weeks, the patient needs to wear compression underwear day and night, and for the next two weeks only during the day — she can remove the underwear at night. There is no need to sit at home all this month, the lifestyle can be mobile. But within reason — no training, swimming pool, sauna, active loads.
Myth 4.
If you do plastic surgery, then only abroad. There are better specialists.
Completely optional. You can safely contact our specialists in order to get rid of excess fat, to perform operations to correct the mammary glands, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty. We have many years of experience in performing these operations at the highest professional level, using modern technologies. Moreover, there are statistics of foreign clients applying to our clinics for such operations! Today, 30-40% of all requests are foreign clients.
Myth 5.
Breast augmentation increases the risk of developing cancer.
Despite the fact that breast augmentation is one of the most popular operations, it should be taken as seriously and carefully as possible. Fortunately, it is absolutely safe and all suspicions that it can cause cancer are nothing more than a delusion. Even if the implant is not installed correctly and if the wrong shape is chosen, there will be no such risk. The only thing that can happen in this case is the appearance of scar tissue, capsular contracture and inflammation as a complication. But all this depends on the surgeon and, of course, the correct behavior of the client during the postoperative rehabilitation period.
Myth 6.
Breast augmentation is not allowed before pregnancy.
There is no ban. But you should understand that no matter how well you put the implant, the physiological processes that occur in the body during pregnancy will violate its original form. No one can guarantee that after childbirth, the shape of the breast obtained after plastic surgery will remain the same. But pulling out the implant before pregnancy is completely optional — it does not violate the lactation function of the mammary gland. Therefore, with the implant, you can feed the child.

Myth 7.
Immediately after childbirth, you can remove extra centimeters from the waist surgically.
This is an operation that is certainly possible. Plastic surgeons after childbirth can remove excess skin-fat apron.
It’s not harmful, but very individual. Some women do not need such an operation at all, all the kilograms gained will go away from them after a couple of months of feeding. Compression underwear is enough for them, with the help of which the skin is reduced very effectively. Even if a woman has stretch marks, cosmetologists can easily cope with them.
Myth 8.
Before the age of 40, it is too early to think about plastic surgery.
I remember how, in residency, the teachers told us that the classic operation to correct the skin of the face and neck can only be performed on women over 45 years old. But in my practice there were cases when young girls came for such an operation and were satisfied. Therefore, it depends on one’s own readiness, internal psychological attitude. And the doctor should first of all focus on visible age-related changes in the face, and in their harmonious reproduction. Not isolated deep lacrimal or nasolabial furrows, which can be easily corrected by the introduction of fillers. But if more serious changes are noticeable, loss of elasticity, then it makes sense to offer a full-scale correction of the skin of the face and neck. Taking into account the development of hardware cosmetology, women turn to us with a request for face and neck correction at a much older age than my teachers thought 20 years ago. For example, I had a 79-year-old patient who had knee liposuction and facial correction. She had no health contraindications. After the operation, she felt like she was born again. And psychologically it was important for her. But this, of course, is all very individual.
Myth 9.
You can remake yourself with the help of plastic surgery endlessly.
It’s up to you to decide. But remember that plastic surgery is a serious surgical intervention using anesthesia. And anesthesia affects our body. Women should think more about the state of health and intelligence, and not about appearance. Only recently the topic of the need to study the limit of the human body for anesthesia was raised. And who, if not plastic surgeons, should think about this? How many unnecessary plastic surgeries were performed, without which patients could live in peace? It is necessary to conduct studies of a single organism on the number of permissible surgical intervention. Patients should understand how much health they can afford for “Wishlist”, and how much should be left “in reserve”, in case you need an operation for health reasons.
As a representative of plastic surgery and as a person responsible for the high prestige of our specialists, I believe that this moment should be covered as much as possible and studied intently. Then we will look in the eyes of the community as doctors who care about health. And do not put the health of our patients at risk.
