🙂 Hello dear readers! The article “Nikolai Tsiskaridze: biography, interesting facts” is dedicated to the legendary dancer, rector of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, member of the Council for Culture and Art under the President RF.
Childhood and youth
Nikolai was born on the night of the coming 1974 in Tbilisi. This was the long-awaited and only child. His mother has already turned 42 years old, but she has long dreamed of children and dared to give birth, being single.
Lamara Tsiskaridze worked for several years at a nuclear power plant in Obninsk, then taught physics and mathematics to children in a Tbilisi school.
Father, according to Nikolai Maksimovich himself, had a different family and early passed away. Paternal grandmother was French and for a time served as an actress in the theater.
Lamara soon married her colleague, an Armenian by nationality. He became the stepfather of little Kolya. The family lived in the Vake district, and the boy went to school no. 162, where his mother worked. Lamara loved theaters and, whenever possible, took her son with her.

In early childhood, the boy “with expression” read poetry, sang and even played in the theater. His fascination with literature appeared early, thanks to his Ukrainian nanny. She read the six-year-old Kolya the works of Shakespeare, Tolstoy and taught him how to embroider!
For a long time Kolya was under the impression of the movie “Romeo and Juliet” by F. Zeffirelli. Perhaps it was this film that awakened in him a desire to express the feelings of young people in dance.
At the age of 10, Kolya began his studies at the local school of choreography. From the age of 13 he continued his studies in Moscow under the guidance of P.A. Pestova. Tsiskaridze highly appreciated the rather demanding manner of the teacher.
He was distinguished by excellent physical data. In concert programs he performed with solo numbers or performed pas de deux to the applause of an enthusiastic audience.
The Bolshoi Theatre
After graduating from college in 1992, Nikolai was accepted into the troupe of the Bolshoi Theater. At first he danced in the corps de ballet group, and then performed solo parts in the performances of Yuri Nikolaevich Grigorovich.
His career took off in 1995. He performed almost all the main male parts in the theater (from 1992 to 2013).
Nikolai Tsiskaridze received a lot of useful and friendly advice from the ballet legend Galina Ulanova, for which he always showed her sincere gratitude.
Tsiskaridze reached the heights of ballet art. His height, slenderness and attractiveness make him stand out even on the street. He is incredibly plastic and musical. Tsiskaridze perfectly realizes his ideas, possessing the thinking of a strategist. He assesses the situation, foresees the future, but he also knows the way to a temporary retreat. These traits should be cultivated by his students.
- 1996 – graduated from the Institute of Choreography.
- In 2001, he fulfilled his old dream – the role of Herman in R. Petit’s ballet The Queen of Spades.
- 2006-2009 – participates in the Kings of the Dance program, where unique performances by R. Petit and B. Eifman were performed.
- He worked as a member of the jury in the TV show “Dancing with the Stars”. He hosts the program “Masterpieces of the World Musical Theater”.
- He graduated with excellent marks from the magistracy of the Law Academy.
In 2011, he criticized the overhaul of the Bolshoi Theater, which took about six years. He spoke sharply about the leadership, which agreed to the poor quality of the restoration work. A scandal has broken out!
He believes that the historical stage, which was decorated with old stucco molding, now, like a “poor relative” with cheap plastic, belittles the significance of Russian culture. The interiors are more reminiscent of hotels in Turkey.
