Nifuroxazid – what is it?
Nifuroxazide is a prescription drug (depending on the dose) that is used for the purpose treat diarrhea caused by bacteria. The drug Nifuroxazide is antibacterial preparation and exhibits a local action in the lumen of the gut against some species of bacteria that cause acute and chronic diarrhea. At the same time, it does not destroy non-pathogenic bacteria that occur naturally in the digestive tract and does not cause the formation of drug-resistant bacteria. It is not absorbed into the body. Nifuroxazide can be used in the form of an oral suspension and tablets.
Nifuroxazide – active substance
The active substance of this drug is nifuroxazide, a derivative of nitrofuran that has an antibacterial effect. Nifuroxazide inhibits the activity of bacterial enzymes and the synthesis of bacterial proteins. The effectiveness of Nifuroxazide is based on the fact that this drug is active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms (Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiella, Escherichia), which are responsible for intestinal infections and acute infectious diarrhea. In addition to the active substance, the drug also contains: corn starch, gelatinized corn starch, sucrose, magnesium stearate, gelatin, yellow iron oxide, titanium dioxide.
Nifuroxazide – indications and contraindications
The primary indication for the use of Nifuroxazide is the occurrence of acute or chronic diarrhea in the course of bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract. Unfortunately, not everyone can use Nifuroxazide in case of diarrhea. Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the preparation is a contraindication to taking this drug. In addition, Nifuroxazide should not be used in newborns up to 1 year of age and in premature babies (in the case of the oral suspension) and children under 6 years of age (in the case of tablets).
Nifuroxazide – how to dose?
Nifuroxazide is available as a suspension (syrup) and tablets to be taken orally.
The recommended doses of the drug should not be exceeded, as this will not accelerate its action and can definitely harm your health.
Nifuroxazide syrup – dosage
Nifuroxazide syrup in children over 30 months of age is used in a dose of 660 mg a day divided into three separate doses, e.g. morning, afternoon and evening. Children over one year of age may be given a dose of 220-660 mg divided into 2-3 portions during the day. Before using Nifuroxazide syrup for children, the bottle should be shaken vigorously, and then measure the dose using the measuring cup included in the package. The dose may be washed down with water. Nifuroxazide in syrup should not be used for more than 7 days. If the diarrhea continues after this time, you will need to see a specialist doctor.
Nifuroxazide (200) in tablet form – dosage
- Adults: 800 mg daily in 2-4 divided doses.
- Children after 6 years of age: 600-800 mg daily in 2-4 divided doses.
- Do not use for more than 3 days without consulting a doctor.
Nifuroxazide – side effects
Nifuroxazide, like any other drug, can cause side effects. However, studies of the drug have shown that side effects are extremely rare and do not occur in all patients taking the drug. As a rule, nifuroxazide is very well tolerated by the body. The side effects it can cause are skin allergic reactions, including rash or hives.

Nifuroxazide can cause allergic reactions – then you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.
If diarrhea persists after 2 or 3 days of treatment, or if diarrhea gets worse while taking this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.
