The Government Legislation Center has published a draft amendment to the Act on Cemeteries and Burying the Dead. The proposed changes are to be introduced on a larger scale by the so-called coroner – person declaring death.

Who can become a coroner?
According to the regulations, a doctor will be able to become a coroner who:
- has the right to practice in Poland,
- should have a specialization in forensic medicine, pathomorphology, anaesthesiology and intensive therapy, emergency medicine or with at least 3 years of experience in the profession of a doctor, and completed training in the forensic department of a medical university,
- is in the course of specialization in the field of forensic medicine or pathomorphology, after completing the second year of specialization training and obtaining the consent of the head of specialization.
In Poland, the institution of the coroner, i.e. the person responsible for confirming deaths, was introduced in 2002. According to the regulations currently in force, he is a forensic doctor. Its task is to assess the cause of death and issue an appropriate certificate.
The project assumes that the coroners will closely cooperate with the services when doubts arise as to the cause of death. The head of the nursing home will also be able to summon the place of the coroner’s death.

Coroner – duties
The list of coroners will be prepared by the voivode on the basis of reports submitted by the District Medical Chamber. The list, along with the necessary contact details of the medics, will be available in the Public Information Bulletin. How much will the coroner earn?
According to the draft, the coroner can count on 15 percent for confirming and issuing a death report with a card. national average. If the regulations came into force this year, the salary would be about PLN 680.
