Since the first case of Omicron infection was discovered, scientists are investigating how much it differs from previous SARS-CoV-2 variants. One of the analyzed parameters is its infectivity, as it was speculated on the basis of the rate of spreading that it is much higher than the existing strains. The researchers finally found out how much.

  1. French scientists analyzed over 131. samples taken from patients infected with the coronavirus
  2. Most cases were caused by infection with the Omikron and Alpha variants
  3. It was established, inter alia, that the new strain is up to 105 percent. more contagious than Delta

Why is Omikron more contagious than other variants?

According to a study by French scientists, the Omikron coronavirus variant may be up to 105 percent. more infectious than the previously identified strain, Delta, Euronews reported, citing a study by French researchers.

131 screening tests were analyzed in an unreviewed study, published on medRxiv with articles on health sciences. The samples were from France between October 478 and December 25, 18.

The results showed that among young people, the majority of infections were caused by the Omikron or Alpha variant, less often – Delta. Based on these results, Scientists compared the transmissivity among people infected with Omicron or Alpha versus that among people infected with Delta over a 21-day period. The difference was about 105%.

The first studies of Omikron have shown that it is more infectious and more resistant to treatment than other variants of the coronavirus, and that it causes a milder course of COVID-19 compared to previous strains. Moreover this variant attacks the upper respiratory tract more easily than Delta but is less effective at infecting the lungs. These insights can help explain why it’s more contagiouswhile also causing lower mortality compared to Delta, Euronews notes.

A “tsunami of infections” is going through the world

At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this week against labeling Omicron as “benign”, indicating that there is a ‘tsunami of infections’ crippling health systems around the world.

“Like the previous variants, Omikron leads to hospitalization and kills”, stressed WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“Hospitals are becoming overburdened and staffing shortages, resulting in avoidable deaths, not only from COVID-19, but also from other diseases and injuries when patients cannot receive treatment in time,” Ghebreyesus pointed out. (PAP)
