Start COVID-19 vaccine Frequently asked questions Where can I get vaccinated? Check if you can get vaccinated

The protection that COVID-19 vaccines provide decreases over time. Therefore, a third dose was introduced, the so-called booster, and in the future there is even the fourth injection. How does the effectiveness of individual preparations change in the following months? This is what we learn from a new study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

  1. The effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines is starting to decline. It is still very high after two months, but decreases significantly after seven months
  2. Johnson & Johnson single-dose vector preparation performed the worst in this comparison
  3. The study showed a decrease in protection against infection, non-hospitalization and possible death of a person suffering from COVID-19

The protection provided by vaccines against COVID-19 diminishes over time

When the COVID-19 vaccines were circulating and given to the first patients, no one knew yet that their effectiveness would decline over time. It turned out only later, which resulted in the decision to introduce a booster, i.e. a booster dose, widely. Its mission is to restore a high level of protection in fully vaccinated people.

Recent studies indicate that even after a few months, patients who took the preparations of Pfizer, Moderny and Johnson & Johnson are still well protected against the worst consequences of coronavirus infection – the need for hospitalization and death. However, the matter is completely different with the prevention of the infection itself. And here the single-dose Johnson & Johnson is definitely the worst. AstraZeneki was not included in the study because it is not administered in the United States.

Our results showed that the efficacy of the two messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines – Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna – was very high and sustained for protection against hospitalization and death. Moderny vaccine was slightly more effective than Pfizer’s preparation. It should be noted that the Pfizer vaccine was administered at a lower dose than Moderna (30 mg per dose vs. 100 mg per dose), the researchers write.

What protection do COVID-19 vaccines provide after two and seven months? Results

Studies on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines were conducted between December 11, 2020 and September 8, 2021. The results were obtained from the analysis of 10,6 million samples collected from residents of North Carolina.

The research of scientists shows that two months after full inoculation with mRNA preparations, protection against coronavirus infection remains at a high level. For Pfizer, it is 94,5 percent, and for Moderna – 95,9 percent. In the case of Johnson & Johnson, its effectiveness was checked after a month. After this time, it is much lower – 74,8 percent.

The situation looks much less favorable after a few months. When it comes to Johnson & Johnson, its effectiveness is only 59,4% after five months. Seven months after full inoculation with mRNA preparations, the results are better. Protection after Pfizer remains at the level of 66,6 percent, and after Moderna – 80,3 percent.

For all preparations, as the drug emphasizes. Bartosz Fiałek, the weakening effect of vaccines was related not only to the immune system itself, but also to the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus – Delta. When vaccines against COVID-19 were developed, they were developed with previous mutations in mind. The Delta variant therefore partially eludes these preparations.
