Neurotop Retard is a drug that acts on the central nervous system. Used in neurology, it has an extremely effective anticonvulsant effect and in cases of epilepsy with tonic-clonic and other seizures, peripheral neuralgia and facial neuralgia. It is also recommended during bipolar disorder, psycho-organic syndromes, paroxysmal migraine headaches and schizoaffective psychosis. Used in the alcohol absenteeism team. The active ingredient of the drug is ineffective in cases of unconscious seizures, as well as in myoclonic seizures.

Neurotop – drug composition

The active substance of Neurotop is carbamazepine (Carbamazepinum). The drug is available as extended-release oral tablets.

The sale includes Neurotop Retard 300, containing 300 mg of carbamazepine, and Neurotop Retard 600, containing 600 mg of carbamazepine.

Neurotop – dosage

Neurotop Retard is dosed as prescribed by your doctor.

The dosage of the preparation is divided depending on the ailment being treated. In the case of anticonvulsant therapy, the administration of other anticonvulsants should be simultaneously reduced and the introduction of two Neurotop 150 mg tablets per 24 hours. The amount of preparation taken is slowly increased up to the optimal individualized dose (minimum 600 mg per day). If the preparation is taken once a day, it should be taken in the evenings.

The dosage varies for children. It ranges from 15 to 20 mg per kg of body weight daily, taken in the morning and evening.

Patients with manic or manic-depressive syndromes take 300 to 1500 mg of the active ingredient per 24 hours. The maintenance dose here is also 600 mg, broken into two portions – morning and evening. In acute mania, the amount administered per day should be slowly and carefully increased to the target concentration.

Treatment of neuralgia starts with 300 mg every 24 hours and then increases it until the pain is resolved. In the further treatment process, the minimum effective dose is determined. The basic amount of medicine that is effective is usually 600 mg a day.

For alcohol abstinence syndrome, the dose is the same as the basic one, i.e. 600 mg per 24 hours. Acute cases require up to 1200 mg in the first days of treatment.

Patients with renal impairment should only receive 75% of the target dose.

The drug should be used at the same time every day. It should be washed down with plenty of liquid. The tablets with the preparation can be crushed and used as a suspension with any liquid except grapefruit juice. This solution should be drunk as soon as possible after preparation.

Neurotop – side effects

Like any strong drug, Neurotop can (but does not have to) cause multiple side effects. They include: ataxia, fatigue, drowsiness, states of confusion and anxiety, anorexia, dizziness, nausea, constipation, vomiting, disorders of the heart, hematopoietic system and kidneys. Skin reactions may occur as a result of allergy or hypersensitivity. Rarely, there are: conjunctivitis, muscle pain, disorders of the water and intestines, enlargement of the mammary glands.

Since dizziness is one of the side effects, it is prohibited to drive while the treatment is taking place.

Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it may damage the central nervous system.

Neurotop – precautions

Special precautions by the physician and the patient should be taken in case of hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or tricyclic antidepressants. Kidney, heart and liver disease is an important factor in risk assessment.

The preparation cross-reacts with many drugs, such as ethosuximide, alprazolam, cardiac glycosides, impramine, doxycycline, MAO inhibitors, phenytoin, anticoagulants, cyclosporins, and contraceptive hormones. The attending physician should be informed about the use of all medicinal substances, even those obtained without a prescription. Neurotop must not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless the potential benefits, as determined by the physician, outweigh the possible risks.

The cost of Neurotop Retard 300 depends on the patient’s payment and ranges from several dozen groszy to PLN 17 for a package of 50 tablets. Neurotop Retard 600 costs about PLN 30 and can be fully refunded.
