What principles does neurolinguistic programming come from, in what cases is it effective, and why is it not recognized by academic science?
Definition
Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a technique aimed at changing habitual communication patterns and gaining confidence in life. The focus is on the «how» rather than the «why». This technique is widely known, but not recognized by academic psychology, since there is no reliable evidence of its effectiveness and it is likely to be used for manipulation purposes (in particular, by supporters of destructive cults and sects).

Operating principle
Based on the art of «modeling», NLP proposes to identify the client’s thinking system and reprogram his behavior model for the most successful one. This technique is based on three basic principles. Learn your way of communication: everyone perceives the world and communicates with other people depending on their perception filters (visual, auditory or kinesthetic). Mobilize your internal resources by mastering the so-called «resource» models of behavior, and with their help achieve success. Initiate long-term change: In developing the ability to achieve success, NLP suggests projecting yourself into a situation of failure and experimenting (as a workout) with new forms of behavior.

Progress
The session begins with a general introduction — a conversation in which clients formulate their motivations and goals they want to achieve. The facilitator observes the audience in order to understand which sensory system is the main one for everyone. This helps to explore then personal patterns of behavior. With the help of questions, the moments in which the client feels most effective are determined. Thus, a “set of tools” is created that a person can use in difficult situations.
