famous brand history

Nestlé was formed in 1905 by the merger of the Anglo-Swiss Dairy Company founded in 1866 by brothers George and Charles Page and Farin Lactia Henri Nestlé. The company grew significantly during World War I and World War II, expanding its offerings beyond condensed milk and baby products. The organization has made a number of corporate acquisitions, including Crosse & Blackwell in 1950, Findus in 1963, Libby in 1971, Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988, Klim in 1998, and Gerber in 2007. Nestlé has a primary listing on the SIX exchange and is part of the Swiss market index, as well as a secondary listing on Euronext.

The origins of Nestlé date back to the 1860s when two separate Swiss businesses were founded that would later become Nestlé’s core. In the decades that followed, the two competing businesses aggressively expanded their business throughout Europe and the United States. In 1866, Charles Page (US consul in Switzerland) and George Page, brothers from Lee County (Illinois, USA), created the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company in Cham (Switzerland). Their first British operation was in 1873 at Chippenham, Wiltshire.

In 1867 in Vevey, Henry Nestle developed milk-based baby food and soon began selling it. The following year, Daniel Peter perfected his invention, the milk chocolate production process. Henri Nestlé retired in 1875, but the new ownership of the company retained its name as Société Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé. In 1879, Nestle teamed up with milk chocolate inventor Daniel Peter.

In 1904, François-Louis Cuyler, Charles Amédé Kohler, Daniel Pieter and Henri Nestlé were involved in the creation and development of Swiss chocolate, selling the first Nestlé milk chocolate. In 1905 they merged to become the Nestlé Corporation and the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Dairy Company, retaining that name until 1947 (the name “Nestlé Alimentana SA” was adopted). Later it was acquired by Fabrique de Produits Maggi SA (founded in 1884) and its holding company Alimentana SA, Kempstalt (Switzerland).

Maggi was a major manufacturer of soup mixes and related foods. The current company name was adopted in 1977. By the early 1900s, the company was operating in factories in the United States, Britain, Germany, and Spain. World War I created a demand for dairy products in the form of government contracts, and by the end of the war, the corporation’s production had more than doubled.

In January 1919, Nestlé bought two Oregon condensed milk plants from Geibisch and Joplin for $250. One was in Bandon and the other was in Milwaukee. They expanded them considerably, processing 000 pounds of condensed milk daily at the Bandon plant.

Nestlé immediately felt the effects of World War II. Profits dropped from $20 million in 1938 to $6 million in 1939. Factories have been set up in developing countries, especially in Latin America. Ironically, the war helped with the introduction of Nescafé’s latest product (“Nestlé’s Coffee”), which became the staple drink of the US military. Production and sales of Nestlé grew in the economy of the time. After the war, government contracts dried up and consumers switched back to fresh milk. However, Nestlé management responded quickly, streamlining operations and reducing debt. In the 1920s, Nestlé took first place in the production of new products for the first time, and the development of chocolate became the second most important in the company.

Production and product range

Since 2013, Nestlé has implemented pollution prevention initiatives and has used what it calls the “factory and farmers” model, which eliminates the middleman. Farmers bring milk directly to Nestlé’s network of collection centers. According to the company, a computerized system tests and labels each batch of milk. To further reduce the risk of infection at the source, the corporation provides farmers with ongoing training and assistance in cow selection, feed quality, storage and other assistance.

Nestlé has over 8000 brands with a wide range of products in different markets including:

  • coffee;
  • bottled water;
  • milkshakes and other drinks;
  • dry breakfasts;
  • baby food and healthy food;
  • seasonings;
  • soups and sauces;
  • frozen and chilled products;
  • pet food.

Product quality control

In 2014, the company opened the Nestlé Food Safety Institute (NFSI) in Beijing to help meet China’s growing demand for healthy and safe food, one of the top three concerns among Chinese consumers. NFSI has announced that it will work closely with authorities to help provide the scientific basis for food safety policy and standards, supporting early management of these issues and collaboration with local universities, research institutes and other government agencies.

In recent years, the company has had several incidents in which it was found that it was not the technologies themselves that did not correspond to the manufacture of products, but the raw materials for their production (from their suppliers). According to Nestlé, they have introduced testing of their products – this should minimize the cases of product contamination that have occurred before.

company in the world

The company cooperates with well-known organizations and brands. In 1993, plans were made to update and modernize the overall look of the Walt Disney EPCOT Center, including a major overhaul of the Land Pavilion. Kraft Foods withdrew its sponsorship on September 26, 1993, while Nestlé took over. The gradual reconstruction of the pavilion began on September 27, 1993. In 2003, Nestlé renewed its sponsorship of The Land, however it was announced that Nestlé would oversee its own refurbishment both inside and outside the pavilion.

Between 2004 and 2005, it underwent a second major renovation. Nestlé stopped sponsoring The Land in 2009.

The company also takes part in supporting festivals. Nestlé and the Beijing Music Festival signed an agreement on August 5, 2010 to extend Nestlé’s sponsorship of this international music event for three years. The corporation has been an extended sponsor of the Beijing Festival for 11 years since 2000. The new agreement extended this partnership until 2013.

Nestlé has been collaborating with the Salzburg Festival in Austria for about 20 years. In 2011 they resumed work in Salzburg until 2015.

Together, the “Salzburg Festival Young Performers Award” was created, the initiative and goal of which is to discover young conductors around the world and contribute to the development of their careers.

Nestlé sponsored the Cycling Tour de France in 2001. The agreement was renewed in 2004, demonstrating the company’s interest in the event. In July 2009, Nestlé Waters and Tour de France organizers announced that their partnership would continue until 2013. The main benefits of this partnership will extend to four key brands in Nestlé’s product portfolio: Vittel, Powerbar, Nesquik or Ricore.

In 2002, Nestlé announced that it was the main sponsor of the UK rugby league team Lionesses for the team’s second tour in Australia with its Munchies product.

On January 27, 2012, the International Association of Athletics Federations noted that Nestlé will be the main sponsor for the further development of IAAF Junior Athletics, one of the largest programs in the world of sport. The five-year joint work began in January 2012. On February 11, 2016, Nestlé decided to withdraw its sponsorship of the IAAF athletics programs due to allegations of doping and corruption against the IAAF.
