Neosine is a frequently used antiviral drug. The basic version comes in two forms – tablets and syrup. When should I use Neosine? We check how much the drug costs and what the dosage of Neosine looks like.

Neosine – action

Neosine is an antiviral drug whose active ingredient is inosine pranobex. Thanks to it, it is possible to increase immunity.

In the basic version, the preparation is available in the form of a banana syrup with a slightly bitter aftertaste or white tablets of oblong shape with a scale in the middle, which does not divide it into two equal parts, but is to facilitate crushing and swallowing.

Neosine – forms and composition of the drug

Neosine is available on the pharmaceutical market as:

  1. Neosine syrup – apart from inosine pranobex, which is the active substance, the drug consists of methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, sucrose, anhydrous citric acid, sodium hydroxide, propylene glycol, AR 0010 banana flavor and purified water; 
  2. Neosine tablets – excipients include wheat starch, mannitol, povidone and magnesium stearate; 
  3. Neosine duo tablets – in addition to inosine pranobex and zinc gluconates, which are active substances, the composition of Neosine duo includes wheat starch, povidone 30, sodium carboxymethyl starch (type A), sodium lauryl sulfate, mannitol and magnesium stearate 
  4. Syrop Neosine duo – contains two active substances (inosine pranobex and zinc gluconate), and the excipients include propylene glycol, sucrose, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 216), citric acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium saccharin (E 954), AR 0010 banana flavor and purified water; 
  5. Strong Neosine Tabletki – in addition to inosine pranobexen, the composition of Neosine forte tablets includes wheat starch, mannitol, povidone 30 and magnesium stearate; 
  6. Syrup Neosine forte – in addition to inosine pranobex, Neosine forte syrup contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 216), sucrose, sodium saccharin, citric acid, sodium hydroxide, propylene glycol, AR 0010 banana flavor and purified water; 
  7. Neosine Plus tablets – the active substances are pranobex inosine and zinc gluconate, and the excipients are wheat starch, povidone 30, sodium carboxymethyl starch (type A), sodium lauryl sulfate, mannitol and magnesium stearate. 

When should Neosine be used?

Neosine should be used primarily in the case of recurrent infections of the upper respiratory tract. It can also be administered to people who have lowered immunity. However, it should be remembered that the effects of using Neosine should be noticeable within 14 days. However, if this does not happen, see your doctor.

Neosine – how should you dose the syrup?

Neosine syrup should be dosed according to the doctor’s recommendations or the information included in the preparation leaflet. Adults and seniors can take 20 ml of syrup 3-4 daily. The dosage for children over 1 year old depends on their weight and is as follows:

  1. 1-14 kg – 5 ml three times a day; 
  2. 15-20 kg – 5 to 7,5 ml three a day; 
  3. 21-30 kg – from 7,5 to 10 ml three times a day; 
  4. 31-40 kg – from 10 to 15 ml three times a day; 
  5. 41-50 kg – 15 to 17,5 ml three times a day. 

The treatment should last from 5 to 14 days. Remember that Neosine syrup should not be given to children under one year of age.

Neosine – how often should I take the tablets?

As in the case of syrup and other medicines, Neosine tablets should be taken according to the doctor’s instructions or the information included in the preparation leaflet. Adults, including seniors, can take 1-2 tablets three times a day, remembering not to exceed the dose of 8 tablets for 24 hours.

Children over 1 year of age should be dosed so as to take a maximum of 50 mg per kilogram of body weight. The tablets should be washed down with plenty of water. If the patient has difficulty swallowing, it can be crushed and mixed in a glass of water.

Worth knowing

Usually, after administration of Neosine, the symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection improve after two days, but the treatment should last from 5 to 14 days.

Neosine – recommended precautions

When using Neosine, special precautions should be taken in patients who have gout or have elevated levels of uric acid in the blood, as the drug may additionally increase it. This aspect also applies to people with kidney stones or kidney problems.

Neosine may directly influence the operation of machinery and driving vehicles. Therefore, in the event of visual disturbances or dizziness, activities requiring concentration should not be performed.

Neosine – contraindications to use

The main contraindication to the use of both tablets and Neosine syrup is hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients included in the drugs. In addition, the preparations cannot be administered to patients who have gout attacks or have had increased levels of uric acid in the blood and urine.

Neosine – interactions with other drugs

Before starting the treatment with Neosine, tell the doctor about all the medications you are taking, as it may interact with some preparations. This mainly applies to:

  1. Allopurinol and xanth oxidase inhibitors – medicines used to treat gout; 
  2. Diuretics – furosemide, turosemide, ethacrynic acid or indapamide; 
  3. Drugs that suppress the immune system – immunosuppressants used by transplant patients or patients with atopic dermatitis; 
  4. Nitridamine – a drug used in the treatment of AIDS. 

Patients intolerant to certain sugars should inform their doctor because Neosine syrup contains 663 mg of sucrose, which should be taken into account in diabetics. In contrast, methyl parahydroxybenzoate and propyl parahydroxybenzoate may cause delayed allergic reactions.

Neosine – side effects

The main side effects that can occur with both the syrup and the Neosine tablets are:

  1. Gastrointestinal disorders – nausea, epigastric pain; 
  2. Hepatobiliary disorders – increased blood urea nitrogen; 
  3. Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders – rash, itchy skin; 
  4. Musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders – pain in the joints. 

The above disorders have been observed in one from 10 to 100 patients. Side effects such as:

  1. Diarrhea; 
  2. Constipation; 
  3. Nervousness; 
  4. Sleepiness or insomnia; 
  5. Polyuria. 

Neosine – can it be taken during pregnancy and lactation?

The use of both tablets and Neosine syrup in pregnant patients planning pregnancy and during lactation should be consulted with a doctor. The specialist will decide whether the benefits of using the preparation outweigh the risks.

Where is the best place to store Neosine?

Keep Neosine out of the reach and sight of children. It is best to choose a place with a maximum of 25 degrees C. The drug must not be kept in the refrigerator or frozen. After the expiry date, do not take Neosine.

Neosine – how much does it cost?

Neosine is an over-the-counter medicine that can be purchased at a pharmacy or online. The price for a Neosine package containing 20 tablets is approximately PLN 17. In turn, we will pay about PLN 50 for 37 tablets. The cost of Neosine syrup containing 150 ml is about PLN 18.
