Neighbors will bite their nails: 5 secrets of a rich harvest that are not talked about

Root crops are cold-resistant, stored for a long time, they can be sown several times per season. However, there are a few things you need to pay attention to in order to reap a large harvest.

Growing these crops is not difficult: they need loose soil, fertile, but without fresh manure. These plants do not like drying out and shade – with a lack of illumination, all their strength goes to the development of tops. The main pest is the cruciferous flea. This insect can be scared away by dusting the plants and the soil under them with wood ash.

Radish

It is completely unpretentious and instantly yields. Ultra-early ripening varieties are ready to eat within 18–20 days after planting. The radish is planted in the greenhouse in April and then outdoors in May and until August. If the soil is poor, the crops are thickened, or the weather is cool, get ready for abundant flowering. At the same time, the root crop stops growth and becomes tough, inedible. Always choose varieties and hybrids that are resistant to active flowering, for example, “18 days”, “heat”, “corsair”, “soffit”, “French breakfast”. Thin seedlings to keep the radishes large. The minimum distance between plants is 5 cm. The soil should not be allowed to dry out, especially during the growth of root crops. The soil should be moist to a depth of about 8-10 cm, in such conditions the radish will grow large and sweet.

BTW. Radish tops contain more vitamins than root crops themselves. It can be added to salads.

All species are sown from late June to early August. Radish is a moisture-loving plant. Without sufficient watering, root crops coarse, shrink and taste bitter. Abundant watering after prolonged droughts leads to cracking of root crops. Do not ignore the green radish: it has almost no bitterness, sweet and juicy. And, of course, plant a daikon, a Japanese radish. It grows well in the suburbs and is well kept.

The root crop needs a lot of space, so they leave at least 35 cm between the rows. Put 3-4 seeds in the hole, the next portion – after 15 cm. At the stage of appearance of the second leaf, the weakest shoots are plucked out of the nest, and when the roots begin to form, the procedure is repeated. The last time the crops are thinned out, when the root crop has reached 5 mm: one strongest plant is left in the nest. It is advisable to pollinate the emerging seedlings with wood ash.

The tops of this crop suffer from the cruciferous flea. Turnips are sown into grooves up to 4 centimeters deep, they are half filled with sand, and then sprinkled with ash and spilled. Since turnips do not tolerate crowding, the ideal option is to plant 2-3 seeds every 10 centimeters. In the future, you will not have to thin out several times, this is always fraught with damage to the roots.

The sprouts that have appeared must be covered with ash or tobacco dust. Ash helps with cruciferous flea beetles and serves as a fertilizer. In the future, it is better to mulch the bed, otherwise you will have to constantly loosen it.

The taste qualities of this root vegetable are not inferior to turnips. The best varieties are Krasnoselskaya, Novgorodskaya, Gera. The culture is cold-resistant, unpretentious, not so much damaged by insects. A variety of rutabagas – turnips, will also grow well in the garden. Plant a few pieces to try, and you will enjoy the sweet-spicy vegetable. The crop can be sown after the crops harvested in July. Watering is important for the swede; it responds well to feeding every two weeks after planting.
