The history of the Negroni cocktail
The cocktail was invented in Italy, in the famous Italian “city of violets” – Florence.
Authorship is attributed to Count Camilio Negroni and bartender Fosco Scarselli.
The Count, after drinking his favorite Americano cocktail, asked the bartender to “fix” it by replacing the soda with gin.
The bartender complied with the request, at the same time replacing the traditional Americano decoration of lemon with an orange. Since then, Negroni has been a resounding success.
The count family even founded their own distillery, where they began to produce the original cocktail on an industrial scale.
This drink was sold under the brand name “Antico Negroni 1919”, and was the first cocktail that was prepared and sold on an industrial scale.
The first printed mention of the cocktail dates back to 1947, when a letter from the famous director Orson Welles appeared in the Cochocton Tribune newspaper, telling this story.
Today, the cocktail is not industrially produced, but it can be found in many establishments where it is served as an aperitif.
