Torticollis is a symptom of abnormal changes in the muscles of the neck and spine that lead to an unnatural tilt of the head and neck towards the shoulder. There are several forms of torticollis, which differ in the cause of the disease and the method of treatment. Torticollis is most often diagnosed in children.

Crinkle of the neck – causes

The causes of torticollis are not well understood. The compulsory position of the head in the prenatal life makes it difficult to properly insert the head into the smaller pelvis during childbirth, which is why gluteal delivery or transverse positioning are so common in these cases. Abnormal births are probably not the cause, as previously thought, but the consequence of torticollis. Torticollis can also be acquired as a result of, for example, injuries, inflammation of the muscles or in the course of diseases of the central nervous system.

Tortuosity of the neck – symptoms

The symptom of torticollis is tilting the head to the side and pointing it in the opposite direction combined with impaired or blocked ability to move the head. It is accompanied by headache, swelling, and stiffness in the neck.

Treatment of torticollis

Children are treated with massages, gymnastics and proper arranging, e.g. to sleep. The parent must remember to tilt the child’s head and twist the chin in the opposite direction by placing a pillow on the child in such a way as to counteract the contracture. With these methods, a good result is achieved in the earliest and light cases. Usually, however, in the 1st or 2nd year of life, an operation is necessary.
