Almost 10 percent survivors who have had COVID-19 are not able to work for another three months because of complications caused by the disease, according to a study by a team of scientists in Spain.
Coronavirus: recoveries with complications
Researchers from the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) analyzed the statistics of the Spanish social insurance institution in terms of the length of time spent on sick leave and the symptoms that prevent recovering from returning to work.
The study was conducted on a sample of over a million people who were cured of COVID-19 in 2020. The authors of the analyzes indicated that almost 100 healers need at least a quarter to be able to return to their professional tasks.
A study published by UCAM on the specialized portal «Prevencionar» shows that over 85 percent. survivors included in the study did not require sick leave for more than three weeks after COVID-19.
Researchers from Murcia indicated that among people who are incapable of work for more than three months after contracting the disease, there are both patients treated in intensive care units and those who did not require hospitalization.
The symptoms of the disease most frequently declared by convalescents were dyspnoea, cough, and a sense of fatigue.
Spanish researchers calculated that among people suffering from COVID-19 and on sick leave, the most common were representatives of health care personnel (almost 11%), as well as employees of small shops (8,7%).
According to the estimates of the Spanish Society of First Contact Physicians (SEMG), the average age of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 is 43 years. Women predominate among those infected, and the average duration of symptoms is 185 days.
