Natural solutions against diarrhea
More a symptom than an illness, diarrhea usually doesn’t last more than two days. It remains however particularly unpleasant, in particular because of the abundant and liquid stools which it causes. Here are 5 natural ways to treat them.
Avoid irritating foods and rely on soluble fibers
When not due to a chronic illness, diarrhea can result from the ingestion of substances not absorbed by the digestive system (fructose for example) or the excessive secretion of water caused by the presence of a toxin (such as bacteria). It is not advisable to use a drug substance to counteract it. On the other hand, it is possible to reduce its effects to better support it and avoid dehydration, through food.
Solicit foods rich in soluble fiber
Contrary to popular belief, not all foods rich in fiber should be neglected in case of diarrhea. Soluble fiber, unlike insoluble fiber, has the ability to retain some of the water in the intestines, which allows the stool to become more consistent. Among the best sources of soluble fiber, we find passion fruit, beans (black or red), soy, psyllium, avocado, or even orange.
Avoid irritating foods
Conversely, foods rich in insoluble fiber such as wheat cereals, wheat bran, whole grains, most vegetables (especially when raw), seeds and nuts should be avoided. Foods likely to cause flatulence should also be avoided: we think for example of cabbages, onions, leeks, garlic, legumes and soft drinks. Other irritating foods to avoid are coffee, tea, alcohol, and spices.
To avoid dehydration, it is advisable to drink often and in small quantities (about 2 liters per day). Here is a do-it-yourself oral rehydration solution:
- 360 ml (12 oz.) Pure orange juice, unsweetened
- 600 ml (20 oz.) Cooled boiled water
- 2,5/1 teaspoon (2 ml) salt
