Nasivin BABY is an over-the-counter medicine for children with a blocked or blocked nose. The preparation does not contain preservatives and provides a long-lasting effect, up to 12 hours. However, like any medical preparation, Nasivin BABY should be used with special care, remembering about the appropriate dosage and contraindications.

Nasivin BABY – characteristics and composition

Nasivin BABY is a drug that can be obtained from virtually any pharmacy without a prescription. The most important component of this preparation is oxymetazoline, which is used to reduce swelling of the mucosa. 1 ml of Nasivin Baby contains 0,1 mg of oxymetazoline.

Oxymetazoline applied topically narrows blood vessels and soothes inflammation. This compound improves sinus drainage, making nasal breathing much easier. The composition of Nasivin Baby also includes citric acid monohydrate, sodium citrate, glycerol and purified water.

The indication for the use of Nasivin BABY is swelling of the mucous membranes occurring in acute rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, paranasal sinusitis, Eustachianitis, otitis media.

Nasivin BABY – action

Oxymetazoline, the active ingredient in Nasivin BABY, is a sympathomimetic, it constricts blood vessels and therefore reduces congestion of the mucous membranes. Administration of Nasivin Baby to the nostrils reduces swelling of the inflamed nasal mucosa and inhibits excessive secretion, which allows the patient to breathe freely through the nose.

In addition, contraction of the nasal mucosa opens and widens the drainage ducts of the paranasal sinuses and unblocks the Eustachian tubes. This helps to remove the secretions and heal the bacterial infection.

Nasivin BABY – dosage

The dosage of Nasivin BABY largely depends on the age of the patient. The drug is intended for the youngest children, but also for older children it can relieve a stuffy nose.

The standard dose of the drug is as follows: 1-2 drops or one spray into each nostril, preferably 2 or 3 times a day. Taking Nasivin BABY should not last longer than 5-7 days.

The percentage solution of the active ingredient, i.e. oxymetazoline, depends on the age of the patient taking the drug. Adults and children after 6 years of age are given 0,05% aerosol, children between 2 and 6 years of age are given 0,025% aerosol, and the youngest patients up to the age of years are given a 0,01% solution in the form of nasal drops.

Nasivin BABY – contraindications

The main contraindication to the use of Nasivin BABY is hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation. In addition, this drug should not be used in cases of dry rhinitis, cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease or arterial hypertension.

The use of the drug is also excluded if the patient has previously been diagnosed with one of the metabolic diseases, i.e. diabetes or hyperthyroidism.

In the following cases, Nasivin BABY can only be used after careful consideration of the risk-benefit ratio (it is best to consult your doctor at that time):

  1. treatment with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors) and other drugs that may increase blood pressure,
  2. increased intraocular pressure, especially in angle-closure glaucoma,
  3. severe diseases of the heart and blood vessels (e.g. ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension),
  4. phaeochromocytoma.

Nasivin BABY – precautions

Nasivin BABY may be less effective (tachyphylaxis) due to prolonged use or overdose. This may lead to the use of increasingly higher doses or more frequent use of the drug, which in turn may result in continued use of the drug.

In the event of prolonged use or abuse of Nasivin BABY, discontinue use immediately. Continued use of the drug can lead to obstructive breathing due to reactive nasal congestion (rebound effect) and chronic drug-induced rhinitis, as well as mucosal atrophy or dry rhinitis. The rebound effect and tachyphylaxis should disappear after drug discontinuation.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using Nasivin BABY. In clinical trials, no harmful effects on the course of pregnancy and the development of the fetus have been shown in women who used oxymetazoline (the active ingredient of Nasivin BABY) in the first trimester of pregnancy. However, in the case of pregnant and lactating women, the doctor should decide on the use of a given drug and its dosage.
