MZ: more residencies for paediatrics and internal medicine

This year, the minister of health admitted more than 100 residencies to pediatricians than in the previous year, and in the case of internists – over 170 – the spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Krzysztof Bąk, told PAP. The Ministry of Health has published a list of residency places for doctors.

In total, the Minister of Health granted 2464 residency places for young doctors and dentists who will start their specialization on the basis of the qualification procedure conducted from October 1 to October 31, 2013. In 2012, 2500 residencies were included in the list.

As Bąk informed, in this year’s fall qualification procedure, the Minister of Health awarded 280 training places in the field of paediatrics. In total, in both this year’s selection procedures, 312 places were awarded in this field – that is over 100 residencies more than last year. The largest number of training places was awarded in the field of internal medicine – 410. This year, in both qualifications, a total of 426 places were awarded, which is an increase by over 170 places compared to the number of residencies granted in 2012.

The increase in the number of internal and pediatric residencies is related to the planned changes in primary health care and easier access to medical care for the youngest patients – said the spokesman of the Ministry of Health.

According to the Act on the Professions of Physician and Dentist and the Regulation of the Minister of Health on the specialization of doctors and dentists, the list of residencies should be announced 21 days before the start of the qualification procedure (scheduled for October 1-31, 2012). Such procedures, on the basis of which doctors begin their specialization, are carried out twice a year (March 1-31 and October 1-31).

Doctors have until September 30 to submit documents for the qualification procedure, and they need the list of available residencies to decide on the choice of specialization.

The remuneration of resident doctors depends on the field of medicine and the period of specialization. The pay gap is to encourage young doctors to specialize in priority areas where there is a noticeable reduction in the availability of specialist services. The salary is financed from the state budget. (PAP)
