Myocarditis can be viral or bacterial in origin. This disease is most often diagnosed in men, usually relatively young. It happens that myocarditis leads to the death of the patient. What are the symptoms of the disease and what should you know about it? For MedTvoiLokona, the cardiologist, Dr. hab. Bartosz Hudzik.
- Myocarditis most often develops during respiratory infections, but a viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract may also contribute to its occurrence – explains the doctor
- Chest pain and shortness of breath are among the most common symptoms of the disease
- In case of such symptoms, it is necessary to contact a doctor

Myocarditis – what is it and where does it come from?
Myocarditis is a medical condition that affects the heart. The reasons for its occurrence may vary, but most often it is associated with a viral or bacterial infection.
– The most common cause of myocarditis are viral infections – says cardiologist Dr. Bartosz Hudzik in an interview with Medonet. – There are many viruses that can lead to them. Myocarditis most often develops in the course of respiratory infections, but viral gastrointestinal infections (often with diarrhea) can also contribute to the development of the disease. These viruses have an affinity for the heart muscle. In some cases, however, myocarditis persists despite the disappearance of viral features – then the inflammatory process within the heart muscle occurs as a result of an overreaction of the immune system. In many cases, it is not possible to establish an unequivocal cause of the disease – adds the expert.

Dr. Bartosz Hudzik points out that viruses are not always at the root of myocarditis. There are other factors in the list of possible causes.
– Rarer etiologies of myocarditis include bacterial inflammations (e.g. in the course of Lyme disease or chlamydial infection), parasitic ones (e.g. in toxoplasmosis), or in the course of autoimmune diseases (e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus, connective tissue diseases, sarcoidosis).

Myocarditis – most often affects young men
Myocarditis is a condition that more often affects a specific group of patients. They are usually men, and moreover, they are younger than older. It happens that it affects even 20-year-olds.
– In fact, after what I observe in clinical practice, this disease more often affects younger people. Indeed, they are more often, but not always, men. The age range is between 20 and 40 years of age, but more often these are people between 20 and 35 years of age. – indicates dr hab. Bartosz Hudzik.

What are the symptoms of myocarditis?
Myocarditis may be asymptomatic, which is not good news. A virus or bacteria can attack an organ, weakening it greatly, without the patient being aware of it at all.
When myocarditis is symptomatic, the patient should see a doctor.
– Disturbing symptoms that require consultation with a doctor are pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest. Sometimes, shortness of breath or palpitations may also appear, which indicates additional heart rhythm disturbances in the patient – calculates the cardiologist.
- chest pain or tightness
- shortness of breath at rest or after light exercise
- irregular or fast heartbeat
When these symptoms occur, your doctor may check you for inflammation of the heart muscle. These include, first of all, the determination of the concentration of troponins (markers of myocardial necrosis), as well as ECG, echo of the heart and magnetic resonance of the heart.
